I almost sold this guy 2 times in the last few years I had it. What a HUGE mistake that would've been...

It literally took me 4 years to understand this compressor. All these controls, so many possibilities... in actuality just a plethora of ways to come up with everything you don't want. Simplicity is the irony in this unit. Chain it after another compressor (preferably a pair of EAR 660s) and voila: Magic.

... another long night in the studio... another mix saved by the mighty blue monster...

The Secret

Ok... listen closely... don't want anyone else to hear... My unit now has permanently the following settings:

Ratio at 1.5, Attack at 12 o'clock and Release at 9. Low Xover at 200, High at 6K. Set up the threshold so the meters show the minimum amount of compression WITHOUT EVER RETURNING TO "0". In other words don't set it to so it reacts only to transients (the High band is the exception to this - it should react ONLY to transients). With these settings you should be doing between 1-2 dB of reduction.

Extremely important is to have your unit FULLY calibrated. I do this every 2yrs with my local TC guy...

... pretend this little talk never happened...
