API, BAE or OSA frame for 500ish modules?

Hi

We're considering to get a frame and then to upgrade gradually the modules. As far as I know there are 3 manufacturers for 500ish modules. API, BAE and OSA.

Which one is the best? Are there any differences at all? If yes, please tell me pros and cons! Will there be any sound quality differences?

Kind regards Deft:::

I've had a Brent Averill lunchbox for years and it's been perfect. I suspect there all good. If you're traveling I've heard some are better than others, more durable. I would go OSA or BEA only because I've had a hell of a time in the past with API customer service, or lack there of.

My main con argument against API is their price. The frame plus the PSU is over 1500$. Another con is that in the API frame "only" 10 modules can be fitted.

Durability is no question for me because it will be used only in the studio. I'd never dare to take my high end stuff out of my studio without a high security service with a panzer truck

yup that was me..It took 3 lunchboxes from API to finally get one that the modules would actually seat properly The one I have now is great.

I'm looking at getting a 10 space.
I noticed the big price difference too.
Is someone charging a lot?
Is someone cutting corners?
Are my modules going to get enough juice in rack X?
I don't know, because I use API in an API rack.
Has anyone used API in different racks, and noticed a difference?

I've had no problem with API customer service.
They've been very helpful with me.
Although, I do foresee a problem if I start sticking their modules in a foreign rack.
Damn.. Now I'm back to where I started off..

I believe the problem was a bad run of lunchboxes, where the connecter board sat too far back. I also believe it was only the lunches, not the racks.

At least, that's what API told me..
Anyone else..?

It wasn't a bad run... not unless that bad run lasted 6 years

Api also made some of the actual module cards to big too

This has nothing to do with the racks, but I noticed Shadow Hills released single pres that fit in an API luchbox!
Damn now I want one too!

Do the Seveth Circle racks work with the 500's?

I have a similar thread running in so much gear.............. I was looking at which empty lunch box to go with an the Averill seems best to me, at least their specs seem really good. Now all I need is 2 Shadow Hills pres and 2 API and 2 Avedis EQ's and I'm set.

No, you won't have the same troubles. I've got two standard API 550b's in my OSA rack that I use all the time, and two Purple Biz preamps (that are built to 500 series standards) in the same rack along with all 4 types of OSA preamps, and they all work fine. So that means there are no compatibility issues that I'm aware of (not to mention there are already a ton of people who buy OSA preamps who already have existing API racks, or people who have API preamps in OSA racks).
