skipping the pre?

i have a session tomorrow night. i simply dont have enough nice pre's to get as many lines as i want to capture [long story, but im trying to cover my ass while saving it at the same time]

i got this drummer who is absolutely the hardest hitting drummer i have ever seen. whenever i record him i almost never need any gain off the preamps, or very little, OR pad engaged and no gain. now i know my flamingo starts with 6db gain and my api start with 10db gain... but i probably dont even need that much gain with some of the mics... so i am wondering, can i run the mic output straight into the ADC? do i have an impedence issue doing that?

anyway, the session starts tomorrow night. appreciate any input [ptp] before then.

For me I think a cheap pre with no gain sounds better then going straight to the ADC because of loading problems.
But thats just me... I know plenty of people that send tom mics straight to their analog tape machine. I think a lot of it depends on the mic.

yeah heard going straight into a compressor or straight to tape.
Never tried straight to ADC frpm mics, done it with guitar and keys..
If it is hard hitting drummer, maybe put the toms into a liitle mackie 1202 or something like that.

I use 60-70% of toms sound from OH's, so the Control24 focusrites are ok for that.

true true... i can free up two channels by dropping the toms into the el crappo pre's.

whats throwing me is that they want to get it all live [well that and not enough nice pre's]... i was planning on getting just scratch from guitars and bass and using all my outboard pres on drums. now coming off a string of shows, they feel like they are too tight to not do it live.... and normally i go full bleed but im going to isolate this session because i am compelled to.

Mic pre rental for the tracking days?

You already said elsewhere on GS they were a) a hot band going places b) paying you well. In that situation I would take the mic pre rental "on the chin".

Stunning tracks have a continued value... when you play them to new potential clients IMHO.

Wadda ya think?

Most places do a 4 days = 7 hire deal..

Yeah the live at once and all good pres.
Yep try to do that. As I said Toms are the only thing that goes through the Control24.
What about renting a API 4 channel for a couple of days like Jules said.

because any rental company is at least 4 hours one way [8 hours round trip] from me. and they are paying me... but not well enough to justify rentals.

after quite a bit of planning and figuring out the layout of the equipment, i think i might just have this under control. session should be interesting to say the least.

another guerilla production [whole basic tracks in a single night]

Fed-Ex doesn't care how far it is... I know that most of the rental houses will ship rental gear. Get a couple of API 3124's from Gear For Days, Rack 'n Roll, or Underground, (All in Nashville), and even shipping won't be too expensive.

well, i would have secured other means earlier but the plans at the time were different. it was only last night when we talked from the final time before the session that i found out things were going to go this direction.

and im almost positive that things after tonight WILL be done the way i intended to do it to begin with [losing all the scratch tracks except drums and bass]

as it is, i am going to buy the drummer a new set up heads for the kit... i gotta take pics to post of this set. its a riot. the chucks missing from the cymbals are hard to believe the things are only 2 weeks old.

I always go into the room listen to the drummer play and find where I want to put the room mic.
So Alpha do not forget to where safety googles for those flying cymbal bits.

no flying bits of cymbal tonight... he actually used my ride. its been the 3rd time he has used it, maybe the 4th? im hoping its still solid. definately testing my luck.

so NICE punchy drums tonight. i got them nailed i think. i ended up going with a 22" kick tunneled to a 26" kick [their facing heads were removed, i put a D112 in the inside facing the beater against the head. i strapped a speaker to the 26" resonator head. man thats the shit. sounds like a heartbeat. i shot some video of the session so i can pull a picture off the kick head to post.

its my U99 thats just a beast with output. i had the api all the way down and STILL clipping with the pad engaged. i had to adjust the amp volume lower [which didnt let me drive the cabinet like i like to] even if i ran it direct into the ADC's it woulda been too much input [impedance be damned]

highlights to the drum sound. two U195s flanking the kit, the ride down low and the hat up high equidistant from the snare... all i really need for the sound are those two plus the kick combination.

shit turned out nicely, imo. nice and punchy. this KILLS the demo i did for them a couple weeks ago. but im in search of a bunch of utility pres after this session. more shit to buy dammit.

Hey Alpha,

Not really utility, but I still love my Buzz pre and they are not that dear, around $1200 for a Dual. Utility, well I use the control24 for toms, and eventually will move away from them. Just as I have 16 of them, I feel silly buying more outboard.
OT My 9098 died tonight, so I will have to fix that or C24 pres for guitar. ouch. Getting a U99 on Friday to try for the weekend as a new vocal mic. I know you love yours will let you know how I go.
