Drums on "the urban theme" by Maxwell

Here's something I've wondered bout for a long time..

What the heck did they use on the drumtrack for the instrumental "the urban theme" from Maxwell's Urban hang suite?

Usually I have a pretty good idea on how to achieve a special drum sound if I hear it on a record.. mimicking, "getting inspiration" call it what you want. Not so with this track..

How did they get the drums so crunchy and punchy and fat and delicious?

Any ideas?

Correct me if I'm wrong.....I think he records to 24 track 2" for starters!
I have (Left over from earlier times) a 2" 8 track head stack from my MCI JH24.
We use to record drums on that thing ....simply ridiculousheh

This can be done without a 2" You just need some samples to augment with that were recorded on 2"heh

using MULTS with the same perspective that you would use for a hip hop record

Honestly, I think Hip HOp has sonically changed music to where drums have to bang a certain way. I'd suggest listening to Black Street mixes when A/B ing even for mixing "soul" records, there's something that's just better about drums when u feel em

I'm not sure who engineered the recording but that also could be the reason why the drums smack and most of his albums/Cd's are scccchhhhmokin....ya think?
