Lucas CS-1, let's talk

Hey fellow gearaholics. The new Lucas CS-1 mic is now shipping. I thought it would be a good time to start a thread where those that have received one, or are waiting for one, can discuss its sound, uses, and comparisons. Of course there is a great thread about this mic on PSW, but this one is for the "Slutz" crowd.

Mine will not be here for a while, so I would like to live vicariously through all of you.

Pair #130/31 here. probably won't see em for a little bit though
..fine because at the moment I'm in Ear 660 financial recovery
looking forward to vocal & OH use though.
all the usual suspects to compare,c12's 47's,67's 49.etc
It'll be interesting to see some early adopters thoughts as they trickle in.

someone please explain me (without any disrespect of this product) why you order a mic that you never heard yourself or anyone else?

I'm actually on a waiting list for the second run and will get to hear some of the mics before i actually buy them.
[there'll be some here in LA in due time]
I think most of the early adopters [sr's 1-100] & myself included are indeed taking a leap of faith:
based on the ears/work and reputations of Oliver,D. Bock,T. Manning,J. Roberts.
+ all hand made/assembled/tested by experienced craftsmen with loving care /limited editions don't suck either

I trust the guys building this mic implicitly. They know sound, technology and quality. It was a no brainer for me. In fact I sent payment in full right away (while I had it). I could have had serial number 4 but I asked for 13 (my lucky number). If I chose number four I would have it by now but since I chose 13 I should have it next week.

I also ordered one from the second batch already without even hearing the first one.

After you've been in the business as long as I have you know who the real "players" are and it doesn't get much better than Jeff, Oliver and Terry!

Agreed with the above two posters... no-brainer for sure...

and, IF the mic lives up to the 'hype', the cost is probably 1/3 of what it should be, or what it would cost you to get a mic of equal caliber (but with a warranty, extra tube etc.).

And by the way, I have GREAT respect for forklift drivers.

good one.

I just wanted to know why you just buy it. I did not want to start another "anti-something-campaign".

thanx

I'm on the list for the first 100...not long to wait now!! I was looking to buy an original U47 or two.. or similar C12 etc whatever M49..a dream... But I got sick of searching for something that was up to spec, not messed around with, a scam, original etc etc to the point I just gave up looking. I just didnt fancy a new microphone...Nowhere to turn..game over.

After talking for a long time of C12VR mods with terry and Oliver I found out about the idea of the CS-1...a limited edition mic built by three guys I totally respect...at half the price of other boutique mics!

I didnt take much convincing...

It's faith. Sort of like buying a car without driving it first or buying a home without inspecting it first.

That is what keeps the classifieds humming.

More like playing texas hold 'em and you've got a full house, aces over kings... Yes there's a slight chance of losing it all... but a much larger chance of winning big! IMO

Its obvious my eagerness to hear this mic is shared with many others.

You've got Olivers technical knowledge and prowess with transformers, combined with the implementation of a great capsule.

Im sure it will sound great.Everyone's restless to know if it sounds amazing,i guess.

Time will tell !

And an even greater chance of it ending up in the classifieds too. Smart folks will audition an expensive purchase first.

P.T Barnum would of course have a different opinion.

Do you prefer Vegas or Atlantic City?

Nothing ventured, nothing gained!

If these guys were a casino, they would pay out 98% of the time. I don't know about you "Doubting Thomases", but I'd go to any casino with those odds, anytime. Just do a search on who these people are.

I never said I was smart. More like a genus (check my logic, yo)...

Since they were all accounted for before anyone had a chance to audition... maybe it's just a big scam! Vaporware! That would suck for the Classified section for sure...I suppose if they are great mics that will suck for the Classified section (nobody selling), and if they suck, no one in the Classified section will want to buy them... any way you look at it it seems as if the classified section loses.

Somebody took the courage to buy the very first U47 back in the day, didn't he?

This was a no brainer for me. As the vintage market is out of my reach.

Early adopters are already posting very, very positive results over at PSW.

#35 cannot get here soon enough.

I got the call from Oliver today... number 13 is on the way and I should have it come Monday!

Can't wait to hear it myself as the colleagues I know that got theirs have had nothing but great things to say... like it should cost at least 2.5 times as much (that's always a good indicator).

Hey Larry, Love to hear your impression of the mic when you get it. As others have stated, I bought one, sight unseen because of the trust I have in Oliver, Terry, Jeff. I am on the hook for #75 and have also ordered one from the second batch.

Strange thing is, I never play the lottery. I am just going on a gut feeling here. If I am wrong, then I have nobody to blame but me

Thanks Roundbadge... btw I have a 1964 Canary Satin Swirl set that Tito Puente's drummer sold me years ago for 150.00 and through in a AKG D12 as I was heading out the door!!! I'll never sell that kit... and he knew it!

I have a bunch of classic mic's I've been buying here for the studio so I'll be able to test the CS-1 against a U67 (x2), KM56, U87 (1970), UM70, AKG C414 (x2, just post C12A/B type, same style) and when they arrive, a U47 and an M49.

I have a few engineer/producer types lined up for next week to give a listen (also while I have them here, to listen to the new 500 series Electrodyne EQ's against the originals... ). I'll report back what people think.

As for whether we're all kings or knaves ... we'll just have to see, now, won't we! Too bad we can't get a Vegas line going on whether these will turn out to be good mics, so we can get a little leverage on the purchase.

I've been thinking about the question of why buy something you have never heard. It's actually and interesting question that can be applied to many purchases.

I once had a custom archtop guitar built for me. You never know what an instrument will sound like until it's made and in your hands so that was purchased unheard.

I bought my Seymour Duncan Convertible amp sight unseen many moons ago when they first came out, and it has been one of my best purchases to date.

A friend of mine is a mic builder, and I bought two of his new mics because I trusted him. Worked out pretty well and I have #8 and #9 of that mic. These were purchased over 5 years ago.

Now of course, you can get burned, but I have been lucky.

Again, it's not as if they were being made by unknowns. That would have been more of a risk. This is not that crazy. #88 and 188 here, btw.

For me, I was at there at the begining of the C12VR mod discussions on PSW i think i actually started some of the threads.. through that I had lengthy chats on the phone with Oliver about these mods..not that i added much...he he...Oliver clearly had some very clever ideas..some of those mods were put into to practice on C12VR's, the results were very, very good...the idea morphed and hatched from that into something potentially much, much better..

Ive kind of been on this ride for two or three years now..wouldnt make sense to bail right at the peak...add in my previous post and reasons...seems pretty clear to me why I ordered
