$2K suggestions on STEREO OH and Vox mic

hey,
what works well with drum overheads and is also better than a TLM 103 for vox?
looking to spend around US$2000. Been looking at C 414 BX/LS as it is flatter than the C414 BX/L II?
what you think?

Two U195's?

Or a pair of Josephson C42's and a U195?

Good luck,
Dirk

Two questions:

1) what overheads are you using now?
2) what pres are you using for vox?

I also use the 103 for vox, but i'm using it through an ams-neve 1073 or 737.

My AKG C451c stereo pair through the Neve is a fantastic combo. The AKG's were about $850 for the pair if I remember correctly.

Get a pair of A-T 4040s for overheads and you'll have $1400 left to spend on a vocal mic. You can find a good vocal mic in that price range. The anniversary Phantom C is in that range.

G'day again Tandem (I responded to your mic pre post also),

The best vocal mic in my arsenal is the Rode Classic II. Absolutely superb and I got it for under $1400AUD. Two of them would kick some serious arse on OH I'd guess but it's only a guess :-0 As far as I can tell it's similar to the U87 which alot of people seem to champion for OHs.

Of course if money wasn't an issue I'd say go for a U47 for the vocals. It's my dream vocal mic anyway.

See my reply to your pre-amp thread. I'm in Perth and would love to do some gear comparrisons some time.

Easy.

if you can find them (check www.ebay.de) a pair of Gefell MV592's with UM70 or UM71's make brilliant overheads. there's something about the lower output of the older Gefell's that just seems to sound much smoother.
for a bright but smooth sound, a couple of 451's with BLUE's lollipop capsules should also fit the budget.
either of these options would work great on vox as well.
but if OH is your main concern, check out the AEA R88. holy ****.

Matt,

Just curious where you got the Rode Classic II in Perth for $1400. I haggled my way down to $1500 but couldn't get further...

Also, what pre amp are you using??? I got the rode classic II on the weekend, and after some equipment changes I am going straight to the mackie desk until I settle on a pre amp... Already the results on the Rode are an improvement over my previous mics. Pretty satisfied so far.

The Neumann KM 184 Stereo Pair makes for superb OHs and a lot more. 1100 E
You still have 900 E to save for a proper vocal mic.

Can't touch the Royers for overheads

Look for a used Royer SF-12...
One of most "REAL" sounding mics I've ever used.
For overheads, room, piano, this mic is fabulous.
