Will an empirical labs sound better than a TLAudio c1?

Will an empricical labs el9 preamp sound any better than the C1?

look around the forums. Some testing done with el9 and people seem to be pretty convinced of its quality. Then again. Haven´t tried it myself yet. But i will as soon as i´ll get it.
Cheers.

Totally subjective area, and totally different animals. Apples to elephants.

The C1 is a compressor that is not made esp. for savage use, it's a fairly uncoloured box that can compress lightly, or a bit heavier, often adding a bit of 'air' in the hi freqencies. It is a box I'm pretty familiar with as it's one of the first compressors I bought.

The Distressor is more of an attitude box, can compress light, but is mostly used and abused as a sonic decimator for squashing the bejesus out of virtually anything. The distressor is mono (but two can be linked for stereo/dual mono) and the C1 is stereo (or dual mono selectable)...

Does this help?

I can't have an opinion on the OP's question as I've never used the TLAudio but, I own 2 el9's and i absolutely love 'em. Great preamps. And all kinds of compression and color if you want, clean if you don't. If you decide to grab one you will not regret it.

Ummm.... The OP was asking about preamps - and the EL9, which he mentions, is a preamp. You answered about the EL8/Distressor and compared compressors but all the rest of the thread's responses are about pres.

Maybe does seem to be the operative word in that particular proclamation.

Ummm... I didn't see any mention of pre's by the OP - just 2 model names, and a vague question of whether one sounds better than the other...

I guess we see differently from what was originally posted...

Well ... the original post was:

... which does seem to include the word preamp right there in the middle somewhere.

So yes, I guess we do see (or not see, as the case may be) differently.

Your best bet would be to get an ak47 or possibly a peluso...

Actually DarkSky's answer is quite spot on. Both devices are preamp-compressors. His description of the differences betweeen the overall sound of the devices is accurate. All the posters saying that the EL9 will trounce the C1 haven't used a C1. For what it is designed to do, the C1 is a fine sounding box. It can't do what a EL9 can do, but is cleaner than the EL9 if that's what you're looking for.

BTW, the C1 is SS pre and tube Compressor. And dual channel (just for price/performance comparisons).

Probably, depends on how you use the C1's compressor, but it's pretty clean (ie: clear, transparent) rather than colored or "warm". Get one to try.

The EL9 is with Lundahl input transformer, and its faster than hell [transeint wise] with a butt load of depth and headroom. Its very Deep, Fast, Clean, and there is certainly no shortage of tone. This thing is on a level of preamplifier's costing twice as much. NOT to mention the Comp/SAT and de-emphasis circuit, which allows you to saturate the top and thicken the signal.

would you recommend the el9 over a 1073dpa with a compressor for the ultimate vocal chain?? Unfortuantely it's not possible to try it out...that's why I am asking...

I own a C1 of the grey version for a long time, tried it on vox, drums, bass, acc guitar. The preamp sounds really ok, but since I got an API and SSL 2bus compressor, I never used the C1 compressor again. I think the compressor is not that great, just ok.

I really think on these kinds of threads... anyone that posts an opinion of which one is "better" should be required to post a picture of themselves WITH the two pieces in question IN their studio... HA HA.

I won't post an opinion because I have not tried the TL Audio.
