Bret Averill BAE 312A Mic Preamps and API

Ok, I know they are both wonderful sounding. I was told that both have similar components inside but .... Has anyone heard both of them, and how close do they sound to each other? I have the 312A in my studio for about one more month before I have to give it back to my friend. I love the 312A's. They have a wonderful sound, great transiants and it has a little smoothness to it. But I have not had the pleasure if working with API's in my studio. If you get the API's and lunch box, it cost more than the 312A's. Do they sound much different? I am not asking which is better as that is a subjective question. But how similar in character are they.

Thanks
