Oh Oh! Custom overhead mics?

Any one ever seen a a pair of these?

Russell Kunkel, renowned drummer, songwriter, and producer with a brilliant career spanning more than a quarter of a century. He started as a professional musician in the heydey of 60s California music. Early triumphs as a session and touring drummer with James Taylor, Carole King, and Jackson Browne proceeded to songwriting and success as a producer with such artists as Aaron Neville, Carly Simon, David Crosby, Dan Fogelberg, and Jimmy Buffett.

Those odd overhead microphones are Doug Sax custom Sheffields.

I like how his hands and sticks are in 2 different places at the same time in this photo. The mark of a great drummer.

I think you can still buy those from Shefield Labs. It is an AKG capsule with their own tube amplifier.

Sorry no. Call the Mastering Lab in LA. They also make a killer tube mic pre.

I have the pleasure to use these mics every now and again. An engineer friend owns a pair (one of which is featured on the 3D mic CD.) These mics are mongrels assembled around original AKG CK12 capsules -- but not just any CK12's. From what I've been told, when Doug and Steve Hazelton originally built these, they found a couple of examples of what they thought of as particularly great CK12's. They had AKG go through their stock to pick out the closest matches and built somewhere around 15 pair to use on the Sheffield Labs discs. The mics are tube and transformerless and attach to an all tube power supply that spits out line level. The mic pre built into the power supply is quite similar to the mastering lab tube pre (which is also stupidly great.) They're definitely in the C12 quadrant of the timbral galaxy, but different. Amazing mics on anything you stick it in front of.

I asked Doug a while back about making some more, and he said that if I supplied original CK12s, he would build the rest of the mic for $7500 ea. You're at the mercy of the tone of that particular CK12 which wasn't sourced by Doug and Steve which would make the mic close but not exactly like the original run.

The only pair of these I've ever seen for sell sold for $30k for the pair.

Very old thread I know, but does anyone know more about these mics? (pattern selection, more about the topology, etc.)

Between 4 and 7 minutes on this video they are featured, along with some other rare pieces.

Thanks for the video and photo, guys.

I've seen a few videos of Bill Schnee's place and he uses these prominently. Wish I could go about building one of these.

Here's your chance to score one of these:

Oh Oh! Custom overhead mics?RARE Handmade Sheffield Labs Tube Microphone C12 Capsule and Custom Tube Preamp | eBay

From the eBay auction text:
"Extremely rare and sought after microphone. handbuilt by Doug Sax from the mastering labs, around a dozen of these mics were made for the industry changing Sheffeild Labs direct to disk recordings. the capsule is a hand picked C12 cap chosen after exhaustive shoot outs. the preamp ids custom made for the mic allowing you to come line out directly in to a console or converter if desired. the preamp offers line out and test out, which is a slightly less hot signal. a detented DB attenuator controls the output from the preamp. proprietary cable is include . this is as high end and esoteric as it comes. the serial # is 9. don’t be foole by the radio shack project box housing, this is one of the finest mics in the world. all of the other ones are represented in world class collections by Bill Schnee, Blackbird studios etc. they come on the market very rarely and chances are you will never see one on ebay again. the mic just came back from Toby Foster and it is in premium ready to go condition. He even took it over to Schnee’s studio for a blind listen to make sure it was 100%. This mic has been featured on uncountable master recordings and as the vocal mic for Keith Urban, Rascal Flatts, Kenny rogers and many more over the years. it comes in a professional foam lined case with the PSU/preamp. This your chance to own a piece of recording history and to never second guess your microphone again."

Doug Sax and Bill Schnee probably have more knowledge about audio and recording than half the people working in this field combined.

I'm sure the mic sounds amazing in daily use. The drum sound in the video isn't my favorite, but it is very natural at the same time.
