Studios with CRAZY Gear

Hey Guys,

Care to share some URLs to the BIG studios? Not necessarily where the client list is big, but where the equipment lists are interesting - with a focus on unusual and rare live rooms/consoles/mics.

A friend just showed me this one. It's awesome. Not really unusual, but great gear, etc.

A nice one around me is Phase One.

You can add David Gilmour's 'The Astoria' studio boat on there too. (Remember that nice tape op interview?)

Feel free to post the obvious NY, LA, etc. classics - because a lot won't seem obvious to me.

: )

Tom.

I worked on this studio's old SSL 4056G+ today (the fold out mirror has since been removed ). I heard a story that the new studio remodel included boring two 17ft. deep holes in the control room that each contain a massive servo motor sandwiched between concrete for the most accurate sub response possible.

I used to freelance at this place http://www.wellspringsound.com/ back when they were still in Lexington. It was the kind of place where you'd lock up for the night thinking "geez, I feel like a kid in a candy store" and then when you came in the next day there'd be two or three new pieces of primo boutique gear in the racks! It was as if the gear was breeding!

Owner Eric Kilburn is an extraordinarily nice guy, but he sure gets my vote for Gear Slut Supreme.

I hope to domeday have as much cool stuff (ncluding the Mellotron!) as my good friend Mark Rubel has at Pogo Studio. Don't miss the virtual tour.

It IS pretty outrageous yes...I've been there for a drums session a few weeks ago. There's ridiculous amount of instruments available for the sessions (amps, guitars, drums kits, snares, basses, a billion stomp pedals...). Only problem is that when the band arrives, it's hard to keep 'em out of the storage rooms and get them to focus on the recordings heh .

He has a number of rooms there, and lot's of nice equipment. The recordings I've heard that come from there all sound top notch. So I would say he also has some very talented people working there. Probably some of the best in the business. I've also read that the food is awesome there, described as a "feast "!!

Hi,
Based on my experience (over 30 years of studio recording, playing and arranging)

when the control room is BIG ENOUGH, acoustic treatment is very close to unnecessary, because resonant frequency is very low, and reflections are very low at the point of listening.
You can see that Gabriel's studio (control room) is VERY VERY big, so the glass surfaces do not disturb anything, and the ceiling is very high, so if you are at the desk, all the sounds except direct sound from monitors are nearly "ignored"

All the best,

Slobodan

I literally live 1 minute away by car from Phase One. I've been there before. Nice big Neve console. I guess I'm saying this in the wrong place ("Gearslutz") but once you get something beyond a Neve BCM10, some vintage 1176's and LA2A's an a U47 tube or Ela M 251, I don't really give a ****. At that point to me, it's all about the ideas. Great gear with ****ty ideas means ****ty results.

Real world is a pretty unique facility - and it's not all down to gear (or even mostly down to gear) All sorts of rooms etc.
Can be a bit intimidating to try and run a studio-related business when you have a facility like that literally just down the road from you heh
That's not to say that they aren't well equipped! I know, definitely, that there's a lot of equipment not mentioned on those pages living in PGs own personal racks (his personal studio isn't featured on the studio pages on the WWW site).
Currently being revamped with new SSLs (of course!) , wunders, an old vintage neve was just recently disassembled and racked...etc. etc. (you get the idea!)
