HOLY CRAP API

OK..So now i see what the hype is about. I bought my first real analog eq today, an API560. WOW..I was stuck using the eqs on my o2r and in pro tools. digital eqs and bad ones at that apparently. I mean I have had a decent front end until now(1272's, 512c's ,summit TLA 100, so so forth) you know some decent stuff. But I've been skimping on the eq part. ALL i got to say is a preamp with out an eq is like a woman without an ass! This eq sounds amazing..

Kinda like the difference between a bordello visit vs. a porn site... one can be a rather pleasant event while the other will get the job done in a cursory manner at best.

Been a dedicated API 560 guy for years. They rock on kick drum and guitars. Now....wait till you hear a 550A or 550B!

I like the 550A more than the 560...the only place I favor the 560 is on the kick drum...otherwise 550A all the way (if I could have only 1 EQ btw it would be the 550A...amazing)

I like the 560 just because it's easy. They crammed a lot of stuff on a small unit. I haven't tried the 550a, just the 550b.

APIs meh, if you think that's good, wait until you try a Neve 1073 or 1084.

Well, sure. You need both flavors. As a rock engineer, recording live drums and guitars, both the API and Neve types are essential, right?

Are you saying youy like Neve better or that you don't like the API sound? You like steak but not lobster? Beer but not wine? Yang but not Yin?

For a street price of $600 to $700 per channel, the API is a fraction of the price of the Neve stuff. The 3124+ is one of the best values in audio at $2400 new.

I have six channels of API (3124 and a pair of 512C) and for my Neve flavor I use the Aurora GTQ 2, which is great, and a 1272. Other than that I have an Audient ASP008 and a Drawmer 1969. So I'm pretty nicely covered for RAWK!

I pretty much use Neve only, whether it's 1073, 1084, 1066, 31102. It comes down to familiarity and personal preference. I know how to get the most out of Neves and I like how they sound. So yes, given the choice between Neve or API for drums (or any tracks), I would choose Neve over API.

I'm not sure where the "you need both Neve and API to make a record" mindset would come from but I only use Neves so I've made recordings with nothing but Neve for preamp/EQ.

I visited Ocean Way years ago. In some rooms they had vintage Neve desks, with racks of outboard APIs. In other rooms they had vintage API desks with racks of outboard, you guessed it, Neves.

Hey, if I had a vintage Neve console, I'd be really happy. Or an API. It's all good. You can make a great record with all Neve or all API or all Trident or all MCI, etc.

But some guys like me who are really in to recording drums like to use both, and would probably choose API if they could only have one. Sometimes I use Neve on kick and snare, sometime API. It depends on the song and sound. Last drum session I did, we used an API on the kick inside (RE20), Neve on the kick outside (Sony C48), Neve on snare top (beta 57), API on the bottom (Beyer M201), APIs on Toms. I can't remember what I used on overheads, but I prefer APIs because they tend to be a bit brighter and shinier. If I want a slightly darker "slower" drum sound, Neve. For quicker attack, more "cracky" drums I like API. A slow-tempo tune where you want a really fat kick, it's Neve all the way!

But hey, it's all good. I'd kill for even one pair of Neve 1084s! heh

I prefer the Neve pres usually although the APIs are pretty solid too. As far as Eq goes, the Neve is much more aggresive...my favorite on distorted guitars...

The 550A although softer, has a very pleasing sound. I feel like with a neve eq I could make something sound worse if I over did it where as with the API its next to impossible...

OK...at the risk of getting flamed here...

I have 4 API pres (3124+), but no EQ. I did just however buy the URS EQ emulations of the API 550s and the Neves...

Any opinons on how those sound compared to the "real" hardware units, or are we back to the bordello vs. porn example again?

The URS plugs don't sound like the real thing at all...I don't know why people rave about them...I was very dissapointed.

Speaking of which, slightly off topic but for plugin EQ's my favorite is by far the GML EQ. It literally is IMPOSSIBLE to make something sound bad with that EQ no matter no extreme you go

Yeh the GML's good.

Have you tried the Sonalksis? Or the Sony Oxford?

I think the Sonalksis is VST only. I use Nuendo, and I like that one, and I like their compressor too. Kind-of analog-ish.

Now I just have to figure out how to use my Waves Q-Clone and make a DAW library of those good outboard EQ's I have invested in. Would be great to use my own plug-in, entitled "API 560, super lead guitar solo"!
