After Pultec clone advice

First post here, please excuse any nervous stammer...

I have used the EAR 822 and like it alot. I have not heard the Mercury EQ-P and was wondering if anyone out there could make a comparative judgement? Also maybe against the D.W. Fearn VT4 and, of course, the real thing.

Cheers.

In my opinion as to preference:

1)The real thing

2)DW Fearn

3)EAR

4)Summit EQP-200B

5)Mercury EQ-P

6)Tubetech

I would reverse the first two in Thrill's list. If not for sound, then for flexibility. Investment-wise the Pultecs make the most sense. Even money, performance for the dollar, if I was doing it again, I'd buy the Fearns.

Welcome!

We've had a couple of nice threads on Pultec and Pultec-type boxes;

Here's one that comes to mind:

Thanks. It does seem that the Fearn is rated very highly here. I had a recommendation from a top mix engineer toward the Mercury, so it seems a toss up between these two boxes. I think I've finally decided against the pultec route at this stage because though I agree it makes good investment sense, and the "self compressing" character it has on the low end rocks and is the stuff dreams are made of, it's just too much money for me to spend at this point.

The link to that previous thread was great too. At least I'm not the only one trying to fathom this!

Another thing please: is it advisable to buy these in pairs?

Cheers.

I have a line on a couple of VIntage EQP1-As that were used by the Lord Algy (Sp?) brothers. Probably will buy those. But if not. I would by the Fearn VT-4s second. Mucho $$$. If you want to spend less, go Mercury. I used to own one, sounded great. But I'm a vintage snob and wanted the real thing.

I use some nice original Pultec EQh2's..and I have the summit .. tried the mercuries
to me there IS no pultec clone per say ..
but...
if I get another pair of eq's [which I probably will soon...GS ***** that I am]..
I'm going with the Fearns..and if I didn't use the EQh's.I'd get those first anyway.
The Fairman looks amazing, but I like stuff to be modular and portable for location stuff, and those won't travel too well..plus I like to loan/rent stuff to my buddies.. so the Fearns can be separated and racked in they're own cases..
the pultecs can possibly float around on things other than the mixbuss....
[pure love on kick, bass gtr, etc.]
And course buying pairs is a great ,albeit a very expensive thing! heh

On Saturday, I will be demoing:

Fairman TMEQ
Fearn VT-4 (pair)
Pultec EQP1-As (matched pair and in great shape)

In a studio in Glendale. Some rich guy's private place.

I'm going to purchase one of these beastly setups. I will let you know how the session goes.

The Fearn is great, but is far from surgical... even by Pultec standards. Great on Kick Drum. I have not tried any of the other "new" ones on this list, but we do also have quite a few real Pultecs... I would go original, but the Fearn is great too... there is just a little something about the originals (when they are in great original condition). heh

Heh, I’m curious too...Ive got a VT-5 in rout arriving next week and want to see where everyone is at with Fearn opinions as this day and age continues forward. I am comparing it to the Ruby that recently came out as well. I’m guessing I got a decent deal on the VT-5 due to the plug dropping? Anywho, excited to say the least based on what everyone has said the last 10 years.
