Using SSl 384 on single mono drum sounds

Does anyone out there use the 384 as a channel compressor for a kik/snare/bass or other? The ratios are a little limited and it is a 'bus compressor' but I was wondering what people thought of it as a standard compressor? The SSL channel strip compressors are different then the bus compressor but how? I really like the sound of the 4000 strip compressors on drums and the sum of all the comressors going to the mix buss then the bus compressor. Can you get similar results with the 384 as a stip compressor running single drum sounds through it?
