BTW IBIS is by far my preferred EQ on 2-buss over MP.

First thought was the Crane Song IBIS for it's versatility, and it's great on the 2 buss.... But, since I usually get pretty good mixes without 2 buss EQ, maybe a pair of the new Avedis EQ's or API 550a's would be my choice.

I got the Ibis for 2-buss purposes but haven't got to try it out yet. I like the EQ on the Chandler TG Channel and LTD-1. Both are pretty expanded for vintage channel strip style eq's. More than the wunder. I have 550A's and 560B's too, I like em all.

I only heard it, and do not own it, but the SPL Passeq would be on my list.
(that and API 550A, Sphere 910, NTP 182-120, Filtek BFE MK-3d but those are "Vintage")

anyone have any thoughts about where a drawmer 1961 tube eq box might fit into the general comparo, considering price (ie. loads cheaper than that manley gear) to a degree along with the sonics? i've got a 1969 front end/compressor and have been dreaming of dropping a 1961 into the rack with it to complete the photogenic stereo channel my digital studio's always dreamed of, but i'm always worrying that my sense of aesthetics might be hoodwinking my ears' better sense. at any rate, i've still to listen extensively to any of these eq's before making a choice. just thought i'd throw a question out there regarding the one (not on the list) that i've been reading/thinking about.

your comments about the '61 appreciated...

Yes, but a good one. I really like my Sonalksis EQ and Compressor plugs. And I don't like a lot of plug-ins.

The 1961 is NOT Drawmer's best work. Great for maybe a live application or where you need something agressive, but not really studio worthy, especially as an every day go-to EQ. You have the 1969, which is excellent because a) its a vastly-improved re-design of the 1960, and 2) It's a hybrid solid-state/tube device.

This brings up an issue that we deal with every day here at Merc, which is the mis-conception that to get "WARMTH" in the digital DAW, you "HAVE TO HAVE TUBES". First off, warmth, the most overused term in audio, comes in large part from your music, your playing, and your ears. Second, good tube devices, especially EQs, are expensive! In fact, good EQs of any kind are costly. What you will find is that quite a bit of the lower or midrange tube gear is NOT as good as solid-state gear in the same price-range. Good solid-state gear, usually transformer-based designs, can be very musical and "warm". And it will typically have higher headroom and more depth and detail than the lower-range valve gear.

Once you get in to the lofty air of Fearn, Pendulum, Manley, Thermionic Culture, or vintage Pultec, well those EQs DO sound amazingly musical and dare-I-say, "warm". But boy are they pricey!

My advice? Get an API lunchbox and a pair of 550B. They are amazing and always have been.

After all, unless you are over 50, the pop music we have grown up with has been predominantly produced using solid-state equipment, right?

I like how you used both a letter and a number to give your two examples...

"which is excellent because:

Doh! Busted!

There are two reasons why I would make that typo:
1) Not enough caffiene
b) Too much caffiene
