Avalon U5 into my custom racked Neve 3415 module works a treat.

Pure pleasure

I would agree with every one of those plus I would add
the new Martech which I've had for two weeks and is
sweet. I'm gonna' post a review later this weekend.

And now for something completely different....

BSS AR-133 active DI. If you've used one you know what I'm taking about!!!! And it's dirt cheap...

Plug that into a neve 1073!

I've never heard direct bass sound as good as when put through my Milennia STT-1 Origin's on the solid state topology. Every note on the fretboard sings and is balanced. Combine that with an RE-20 4 ft from my Trace Elliot V6/Bergantino NV610, and you have it all. The Origin makes an awesome live preamp too, if you're not a tube fan.

If I was going cheaper though, I'd take the Radial.

Bass Di

I use an old Joe Meek VC6 into an old Mesa Boogie Studio Pre Amp full of Mullard and Groove tube valves. I use it on the lead mode channel without enough gain to get much distortion. Works for my customers and as a bass player my self I find it has the real amp feel that I like more than the other units I have tried. I even managed to convert
a few session bass players of world wide repute to its use when they had bought their own endorsed gear with them. Just on a quick A/B. All I can say is in comparison to a sans amp this rather famous player said of the Mesa. "Oh yes that sounds a bit Fruity!"
Make of that what you will.

For bass di, its definately the Avalon 737 or the U5. The U5 has a tone control that works magic.
