Well, I checked it out on some mixes...........yes, it is #1 for raising the mix level at the end of processing.
I was happy with Ozone 4.................until I A/B'ed against DSM.
Remarkable plug-in, takes mixes to another level.
Thanks for the tip!

Sorry for going off-topic, but really worth checking out.

The Pullet needs 38db to 40db of make up gain so yes you will need a mic pre after or some kind of preamp with an input impedance of 1200ohms. Also don't throw it around or be careful with the knobs. Build quality is probably not its strength.

Hi RB,

After a pair of 176', I am interested in these as well.

How would you describe the basic sound, how is the eq, and how is it vs

originals or Fearns?

Regards,

go get the amtec if its between those two! why? the unit is top notch for sure, i havent heard it though, BUT, the guy who builds them is in poland, so if the unit fails, and things simply fail sooner or later, you won´t have the headaches of exporting and reimporting to/from the us! that is if you are not a millionaire, if you are, nevermind...

Regards,
So far it sounds very good compared to the Fearns..a tad clearer less colored in the hi's.the low end bell seems a bit narrower.very punchy.
Give me a couple days and I'll compare it to real Pultecs,Amtecs,Fearns,Ears.

After 176, I'm not particularly interestedheh
Sold mine after 2,5 weeks with no losses.
One of reasons, slightly overpriced and in rack full of tube, non-tube, new and old comps it didn't bring nothing special to the table.
For sure, it looks fairly well built. (talking about 176)

Roundbadge, I was wondering if you had further opportunity to put the Retro Instruments Pultec style EQ through it's paces, especially in comparison your genuine Pultecs. Much obliged!

the unit i have is a beta so the Retro is going back for some revisions tomorrow.
after receiving feedback from the beta testers he's doing a bunch of changes..revised /better transformers etc.
based on initial testing, all signs point to this thing being great.
i'll have it back probably next week for further testing

its obvious to everyone who's used it, but the Fearn has different low end frequency selections for CUT and BOOST, so you can choose to do the pultec simultaneous boost/cut of the same freq. or push/pull the low end in different ways. Its a beautiful thing.

That said, its been a while since I've worked with a well maintained vintage pultec. I do love my Inward Connections 820 EQ's (which are true to the pultec layout). Tweaking the low's on the 820's has a more pronounced effect on the mid range (pulling the sound 'forward' in that way) than with the Fearn. But the mid cut on the Fearn is pretty excellent on vocals and bass....

That said, I don't think I would use either on the mix buss (please don't throw rotten tomatoes at me!) They're just too euphonic/colored. I love that hype on individual tracks, but it got a little smeary for me across the 2 mix. Give me something cold and colorless for that!

The cartec EQP-1A looks very appealing. Beautiful face plate. And the internal components look carefully picked out. Caps, trannies, etc. I am personally happy to hear more clones are out in the market. I hope somebody will nail it someday. Spending these ridiculous prices for some antiques isn't my cup of tea.

I rather buy something new and close to the original than something 30 years old that you don't know if it is really up to spec or not.

The KMR audio website has these cartec EQP-1A with green faces. Whats the deal with that? Any of Euro guys/ owners know if they're blue or green now?

Not a big fan of the Joemeek Green...vs the cool pultec blue face.

Heard the Fearns at the NYC AES....I thought the Amtec's were slightly better with the display headphones..

Any further news on this? Wondering if the EQs arrived back and whether the latest round of mods to the betas put them into "the zone" of the originals?

Tried it in first person in Rodney's living room. Its hard to fool someone too when they take the lid off and shows you how how he made it... Genuinely tube compression!
Those examples are killer, but as anyone knows, you have to hear it in person. Just remember, dont forget to bring your credit card, because you will be bringing one home. This is coming from someone who has had access to the best gear and training money could buy from age 6.https://www.gearslutz.com/board/image...ies/nu/399.gif

I've had a U33 for a few months now. Love it. I have to run tones through it to balance L & R channels depending on how many db of compression I'm using, but it's well worth it.

Demoing a PEQ-1 from Tom and Rodney now which is very nice.
