Hello there guys

Just wondered if any of you could point me in the right direction to find out some history of pre-amps or any detailed sites for comparisons.

I believe James Demeter was one of the pioneers of standalone mic preamps. He introduced a tube mic pre with variable gain and trim about 30 years ago. At that time most mic preamps had fixed gain.

It's not clear from your post whether you are asking about standalone mic pres or just mic pres in general. Maybe someone at Demeter Amps can point you in the right direction. You can Google to find their website.

most of these institutions developed their own gear.
I'm sure someone here can tell us more about the BBC early developments?!
