sE4 does sound really nice on snare. Great on Floor tom too.

My new favorite is the Telefunken M80.

It has less bleed than the 57 and the bleed sounds better. It is crisper and has a tad less boom.

This thread is 6 years old, so I may have posted already, but..

My fav is a 57. Just too familiar to my ears & sounds "right".
The OP wanted fav besides 57 so, 451 alongside a 57 is a winner for me. 414 sometimes.

Really, the OH or rooms may be my fav snare mic, but I'm sure that's not what ya meant.. heh

Km86 and Revox 3500 habe seen a lot of use here, lately. Beta57a and 441 also are occasional candidates. SM57 not so often, except when I want that 1176-squashed "plopp" to add firmness to airy & open overheads.

Here's to the old thread!! At my place its been Sennheiser 431, Beyer m88, or Shure Beta 27, depending very much on the drum/style/player. Excited to check out the ksm141, id be thrilled if Shure came out with a hypercarioid ksm sdc mic...

Okay if we're gonna revisit it:

I guess my favourite snare mic is no snare mic.

(Of course most drummers can't balance their playing well enough to make that work. )

My favorite dynamic is a beyer 201, my favorite condenser out of what I own is an AKG 460b on top and a Beyer 201 mic'ing the shell. the AKG is my go to. I usually use a pair of KM184's for overheads and I like them. And I'd think since they work well for that they'd be fine for top of the snare.

Sennhiesser MD441 with the top boost engaged, usually with a padded u87 on the lower head.:-)

Can't get away from Senn 441 top with Beyer M201 bottom.

Just got a new favorite, but it doesn't surprise me: AEA R84. Only problem is that you don't want it in the line of fire and things might get in the way in order to get the best placement. However, you can use the nulls on both sides of the mic to your advantage.

I've got one in the kick with a pop screen as well, which is also killer.

I like i5s a lot. Kind of like a 57, but better. The Telefunken M80 gave really good results on a recent session too. Very nice off axis rejection.

Lately i5+451 on top and 441, 414 or i5 on btm...
I really liked the sound of Beyer M160 but it's not for hard hitters, one of mine got broken because of too high SPL.
