D.W. Fearn VT-5 Serial #001 Arrives!

Well it arrived - serial #001. I've used the pre's and compressor before, but this EQ is beautiful. The bottom end is extremely tight and punchy for a tube design. I'll report more as I spend more time with it.

I am curious to know others thoughts about it.

Regards,

Am I mistaken to think that gain is in steps of 2db? ...if thats the case then for mastering/buss duties its a no go...

You are correct. The unit is calibrated in 2db steps for boost/cut and 3db for gain. However, upon initial listening, it really doesn't sound or 'feel' like 2db. The increments are more than acceptable for an eq of this nature. It's certainly not designed to be a carver. Even at extremes (+14 at 12K) it sounds lush and beautiful. It has a gorgeous analog quality that makes my Massive Passive sound cheap by comparison (and I love the MP). It is similiar to the mojo the Hammer has, only more expensive and deep sounding.

I am mastering a record from 1/2" tomorrow with it, so maybe I can dig in a little more and report back.

What is the difference between the VT-4 & VT-5?

Where did you get your VT-5?

Thanks guys! Have mastered a few songs today with it, followed by the Shadow Hills Mastering compressor (which is a beast by itself), and the results were simply stunning. The high cut at 28k will knock any unpleasant edginess off in such a non-invading way! So far, I can't say enough good things about it. After speaking with Mr. Fearn, the circuit is pretty much identical to the VT-4, only you get one set of controls for both channels in the same amount of space as a single VT-4. It is more flexible than I thought it might be.

I purchased my unit through Craig at Calistro Music who is a wonderful guy to deal with. Roundbadge, I think I may need another for Studio A so it can live on the 2-buss in that room!

Cool.I'm using the exact same chain on my mix buss.except the Shadow Hills is first.
Still amazes me how damn gorgeous it sounds when I on/off the 2 buss insert button on the console.

Ah, the VT-5 is a stereo unit unlike the VT-4 single channel Thats pretty cool, was the VT-5 actually running in the $7k price range? =O

honestly does this equalizer reflect the maxim:

"you get what you pay for"

.........

like... what, subjectively, does this equalizer do to a mix or stereo track???

I'm curious what one is paying for.... ? the only tube piece I have is the groove tubes vipre and the spl charisma.

That's the old Quality vs Money question. Guess that you'd have to be the judge yourself. I haven't heard the Fearns, still I've ordered VT-4 and 7 on recommendation and after reading what people have said about them here. Except for the sound, I'm one of those who enjoy and are willing to pay extra for superb craftmanship. Makes work much more fun and fulfilling IMO. And kind of safe, regarding that these things will be a part of my sound for 15+ years hopefully.

hmm, $7500 is many days of lunch money...

Sounds like a cool EQ and I'd love to try one out, but more likely than not, I'll end up finding a good mic first

You can occasionally find VT4s on ebay for 2500 to 2800.00 .
I know guys who've gotten pairs for 5K.
[not a bad way to go if you're not wiling to spend 15k on a pair of Pultecs]

After using the EQ for the weekend it is truly a work of art. It is a lot more flexible than expected. It is quite a chunk of change for an eq, but in my opinion the build quality and sonics are well worth it. I have many $3-5K eqs that are great, but they do not sound like this eq. Just as I have wonderful $3-5K compressors, but none quite like the Shadow Hills Mastering compressor. All of them have their uses and benefits.

However, I would certainly spend more money on mics and good pres first, then venture into expensive eqs. Personally I would rather spend that type of money on hardware even if plugin copies sounded exactly the same. I enjoy the craftsmanship, sonic character, and investment aspect of high-end gear. In true slut spirit, why not have it all!
