Vintage pre modules: Quad Eight similar to Calrec???

Ok we have all heard the classic 70's cuts made on Quad Eight desks such as certain Herbie Hancock works etc.

We have also heard the Quad Eight Pacifica (and its modern a-designs reincarnation) being described as somewhere between Neve and API. Fair enough but the same has been said of late 70's / early 80's Calrecs as well.

I understand the Calrecs were mass produced for BBC broadcast duties at the time but has anyone here been lucky enough to work with or own these pieces to comment about their musical similarities/differences?

Just curious because I fancy racking a couple of vintage pre's with this 'in between' flavor.

Calrecs are Neveish in sound. I have used some. They are top quality. No doubt.

Ok so Calrecs have a neveish flavour but would they give results similar to a quad eight or are they closer to the neve sound?

70's Calrec's are basically the same as Neve's - the company was also started by ex Neve employees. I've never heard Quad Eights.

Here's more talk on Calrec.

Hi
Calrec was not started by Ex NEVE employees. There is a 170 Mile / next galaxy divide between Yorkshire and Cambridgeshire!
Simple 3 / 4 transistor amplifier topology appears in many places from many manufacturers and will be 'similat'. Choice and source of transformers will affect the sound most.
