Actually the Beta 58 is a totally different mic with a different magnet and polar pattern among other things. It's not an update.

I get a bit sibilant around 6.5 kHz, and for whatever reason,
the "old" 421's seem to work just fine.
But I haven't piled on any rock style compression so that
judgement could be revised, in that event.

The easiest ones to work with for me are the RE16 (w/foam removed), and EV 666 though.
They complement my voice well (mellow baritone type).
Assume that RE20 would do likewise.

421's are more penetrating IMHO.

Chris

P.S. Have an "old" SM57 that says "Unidyne III" on it,
that's in mint condition, and it sounds better than
any other I've tried on my voice. (fatter/warmer)
Wonder if it could have a capsule of SM7 "quality"?
Ran a dead heat with a U87, when run through an
Avalon 737, when I tried it out IMO.

The Shure Beta's sound pretty artificial when soloed on a vocal IMHO. Not that a SM57 doesn't carry it's own coloration,
of course.

Am biased towards a mellower top than what the neodymium
based mic's sound like.

This is not unusual but it really depends on your voice. I'm told a huge number of Sinatra's recordings were made with a 57!

"Huge number"-like "Duets"?

Just kidding, my understanding is that the '57
(or 545) was used on a number of his Reprise cuts. Guessing a Beyer M500 was used on
some of his tracks with Count Basie, based on
studio photos also.

There was a very cool cover of a Darin vinyl LP
made at Motown(!), where he's holding a '57.
Meant to get it, then the LP shop went under.

There seemed to be a reference to an upcoming movie about Darin on a radio station
today BTW.

I was surprised to notice, a few years ago,
pictures of various British 60's artists using a
421 as a hand held vocal mic for live use.

Chris

P.S. Bob, did you help with any Bobby Darin
albums at Motown?

Naa, that was all LA. I move straight from Detroit to San Francisco and dropped out.

Wally Heider told me that virtually everything Sinatra did post-Capital was done with his gold 546. I'm kicking myself that I never asked Voyle Gilmore, his main Capitol producer, what they used.

Thanks Bob, I had thought that maybe Darin's album was done in L.A., and that confirms it.

In the book, "Sessions With Sinatra", it seems the vast majority
(or perhaps all), were done with the U47.

This is based on the commentary and "real" session pictures, not just the "studio pictures" used for publicity purposes BTW.
