Advised me on a compressor with character!!

Hi all I just bought my UA 1176 and am absolutely thrilled with it!!! Now I am hooked on compressors which add their own flavour and want more!!
Ihave the following.
Joemeek SC3
UA 1176

Whats another compressor I should check out that adds heaps of chracter to the signal - price appx 2K US.

BTW I also have the built in compressor on the 737sp and STT1 but they dont count -

OK guys which one is gonna complement my arsenal????rollz

The LA2A, the Level Loc (if you consider it a compressor), and the vac rac limiter spring to mind.

Alesis Microlimter. That'll set you back a whole $25-50 and it's stereo! You might want to consider an LA-2a or an ADL 1000. DBX 160VU's are also cool but not as usable as some as the other stuff like a Distressor or the Dakings.

I thought the Vac Rac limiter had a smoother tone when I used one last(this was around 98'-99). I do know Steve Firlotte is making a stereo version($3500 no rack or power supply needed) and selling it through Boutique Audio.

I think for character under $2000?

A distressor,Joe Meek,Ridge Farm,Api stereo comp,DBX160-165,LA3A.

Everything else like a LA2A, Alan Smart C2,SSL or Neve compressor, Chandler EMI,will cost more.

An API 525 is no slouch in the character department. You could probably score a pair for around 2K. You would need to power them with either an API frame or an outboard supply of some description.

trakker & distressor , thats what i always read ...
( sure they sound and work great )

but what about the originals ??? urei 1178 , 1176

ive seen some 1178s for around 1500 $$$ +/-

( they are stereo just for the case that someone dont know )

would you rather pick a " copy " or would you go for the originals ?

tube gear is very nice but can be very cost intensive if theres something broken

right now i " only " have

amek 9098 , adl1000 *2 , urei la-22 & plugs

i guess my next choice are the ureis and maybemaybe a " stereo tubetech " [ if god sends me some money ]

heh

Over the top drum sounds, distorting things. Lots of personality not unlike a Level-Loc or something equally trashy.

For over the top trash-nasty comp efx, try Walgreens cheapest "voice recorder" microcassette. I've used it as a "room mic" for drums. It has all the benefits of analog tape (LOL). Patch this ****er into a mic pre to get it loud enough. You need a 1/4" to mini stereo adaptor (Radio Shack). If you could drag a drumset behind your car while going about 60mph on the freeway, it might sound similar to this. Use a shotgun mic out the back of a hatchback or pickup if you're going to do the freeway trick. heh

Yup, Distressor, Joe Meek, the dbx 160x has what I feel is some nice character and is a veryunder rated compressor IMHO... they can be had for a song these days.

The Mindprint T-Comp can have lots of character. I recently abused the crap out of a bass part with mine. It has a "tube warmth" knob that tends to sound best at a little bit or all the way. It's a very useful compressor. It has lots of sounds to it. I think the list is around $1200.

The solid state Aphex Expressor and the Compellor. The DCL-200 is also pretty transparent with the act of compression. Oh, and lets not forget the STC-8.

No..... this comp is way different from the 2254.. these are single slot comps that go inot the 1073 size slot (8 & 3/4") in classic neve consoles. The 2264/e has the variable attacka nd release like on the 2254/e

It was the precursor to the 33264 and the famed 33609 and the broadcast version the 3114 with the later maroni blue/grey style knobs, not the classic 1073 style knbos.. thrill and myself love these comps a fair bit and they are kinda rare and not seen much!

Check them out if you can find them because they really are cool!!!
