Question about Sony PCM 3402 digital reel to reel

Hi, Can anyone give me any information about the Sony 3402. Does anyone know about this? When were they primarily used? If people and studios still use them for archiving? Also any positives or negatives in using the machine.

Thank you

Sony PCM 3402

Jon, the PCM 3402 was a 1/4" digital reel to reel that recorded using the DASH system. (Digital Audio Stationary Head). It uses special formula tape. It records in 2 channels (stereo), an auxillary 2 channels (analog) and a time code channel. They are primarily used for mixdown. I just recently purshased one and trying to learn how to use it. Hope this helped.

We used them in the early 90s to printmaster "The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles."

Switched to the Sony Timecode DAT.

Can't say I was a big fan. Tape drop outs were all too common. The punch in/out was way better than with the analog 1/4" or mag dubbers & sound quality was very good too, but just a lot of very late nights trying to get through a show to QC for the drop outs.
