I know that he had the "28k" switch engaged, so that may have an impact. Then again, how can you possibly judge something when someone else is turning the knobs in a studio thousands of miles away and compressing to an MP3. Nice to hear that they are so close. Looking forward to hearing them "IN PERSON". heh

I was there for that shootout and the sound of that godammed MA5 has haunted me ever since. The sound I associate with it is big and open - perfect for a huge pop vocal (I'm thinking Bono & Mary J. Blige on "One"). There were many other fine pre's there, no doubt, but that was the one that did it for me for vocals. It shares a special place in my inner-slut-must-have-list with the Bricasti M7.

Cheers,

Nice... We are going to have black ones after Avedis gets caught up on orders... They are mainly for people who want the MA5's to match the E27's and R52 rack. But, we will of course have them available for everyone. I think Daniel down at Legacy Audio in Australia is getting them as well.

He's going to have to hire some help!
Avedis has to be one of the nicest most accomodating people I have ever dealt with. Now I'm going to go try it out.

OK here is my initial take on the MA5. Absofreakinlutely wonderful. Big and in your face. Smooth and full! This was without the 28K button engaged. I was driving the input around +50 and the harmonic content is just unbelieveable. It was a quick test of about 10 minutes with my voice solo'd.
I can't wait to track vocals friday with it .... a wonderful thang a thang of beauty.

Here's a picture of a rack with 2 x MA5's that I just finished setting up for a client... I like the red the most, it's way more impressive in person than in picture. But, if you already have E27's, the black makes for a nice color matched setup... I'll be putting a black unit in an R52 with an E27. The red units will stay in the rack with all the other goodies. Either way, they all sound the same at the end of the day....

I've also seen a greenish/gray color that you can get through Platinum Audio in LA, and also a bright orange prototype. Both were cool, but I settled on a pair of the red ones.

Also agree that Avedis rules.

I also think the red looks killer but I don't like the "candy cane" effect of multiple colors in a 600b which already has a blue panel over the power supply so I opted to stick to all black modules for the lunch box and when the day comes that I get an 11 slot BAE rack,(which will be sooner than later), I'll throw all the fashion colors in that box.

Has anyone compared this to a Portico pre? I have the Portico 5012 and was just wondering about the differences.

OK - I used the MA5's again yesterday to record horns (Trmpt/Tenor/Alto) and vocals. It was a gospel kind of thing and I was again totally blown away! The vocals are KILLER!

Last night I tracked acoustic guitars and bass and it shined on both accounts. I'm really enjoying this pre.

So it could be easily concluded that the MA5 is a great all around pre? If all you had was a rack of 'em, no complaints?

I wish I had a rack of them. Right now I am tracking guitars and really enjoying what I am hearing.
1) Bogner Ecstasy Classic blue channel -> Fathead -> MA5 -> 525c=
smooth and big , very musical sounding and sitting well in the mix.
2) modified Epi Valve JR. (yes, you read right) -> Kel Audio HM2d -> MA5
-> 525C very large with great crunchy top , again sitting very nicely in the mix

PS: LOADS of headroom in this pre.
