Best pre-amps for drums

Hi all,

I posted this in the drums forum but didn't get much interest.

Please leave your opinions and comments on the best pre-amps for recording drums:

- Do you use different ones for drums/cymbals?

- Do you prefer valve or solid state?

Please state reasons.

What about non amped drums? I`ve never seen anything that could beat that.

Some quality mics are a good start. Then run them through 1073's or even the BAE 1073's and you can't go wrong.

Compression wise, 1176's, 1178's, 2254e's Smart C1.

listen to this sample by a member here named "ollie".

i'm looking (well was looking for) some pres for drums and inquired into the daking stuff. in the example, everything was recorded thru a daking 1112 console and to my ears sounds great.i'm buying the daking iv sometime this year once i clear the funds. this pre sounds like it will fit my needs just fine.

This is the common reverse-gear response on GS, but I don't think there is a "best" preamp really.

It depends largely on what kind of sound you're going for.

It's been my experience that getting good drum sounds largely involves the stages before amplification to line level.

Not to put down world-class preamps, I'm sure some sound better than others, but there's definitely more than one. I haven't tried all the candy in the world but if you get the above mentioned right and use a decent pre, drums should sound good.

Again, it depends on what kind of drum sound you are after. Lush, pounding, sharp, relaxed, etc.

Oh, and that reminds me. If you have a decent set of preamps, get a Transient Designer 4 before any more preamps if you don't have one already. That device is like steroids for drums.

2 more bits,

This is VERY true, and by the looks of his avitar, I assumed he was going for slammin' rock drums.

I should not judge a thread by an avitar! heh

Just working with what I got right now:

OHs : Always Chandler TG-2 (and Beyer M160s).

Snare/Kick : Often a UA 2108, either channel could also be the Chandler LTD-1 (Im need a second one)

Hi-Hat: nothing

FOK: UA 6176 (The combination of the tube 610 pre and the 1176 mostly on 'all in' seems to work well here)

Toms: BA 312As and whatever's left.

I don't want to add more types of pres but rather expand on what I got in the future. Besides the second LTD-1 this would mean another TG-2 or maybe the Chandler TG Channel and probably more 312As.

It's a real PITA that the UA 2108 has been discontinued. It's killing on drums (and guitar amps). I wouldn't be unhappy using only 2108s on drums.

The Daking stuff is great for drums, OK really anything but it does excel at drum tracking!

API is great but i found mixing some Great River in with it or sometimes just GR on kick and snare gives a different flavor.

Very good point.

And if the room sucks he's REALLY going to want a TD 4.

...or a different room.

For Overheads of any style I tend to prefer my Blakeyboy Neve thing to any other pre- then i vary the other mics and amps massively for the sound.

My Favorite Drum Thread on GS

This is my favorite drum thread on GS. It actually inspired me to get a Demeter preamp:

Preamp shootout - You may not believe this.

It also shows how many different options there are for drum preamps.

For what it's worth if everybody's saying API, and they come in 4-channel single rack units, you probably can't go wrong.
