Maybe not quite the topic for the HighEnd forum, but...

...when was the last time you used the cassette machine in your studio?

I tried to play a cassette today and found out that the cassette machine had not been wired to the patchbay since I remodeled the studio in September of 2000heh

It also didn't work right, the copy funtion had quietly died while the machine was sitting in the rack, not even switched on

Well even though i am only 22... i am still consider a luddite around the studio cos i love anything with magnetic oxinde on it. .. To that end i am th eonly person still banging last minute cassetes dubs down cos i am too cheap to put a CD player in my car cos i keep getting paranoid that it will mean the next bit of kit will be put further away... i am a gearslut after all!!!

But as i type this i rmeber the last time i used a cassete deck was to use it a kik mik thingy. I have aprtable little casette recorder that acutally happens to be stereo. So i tuck that inside the kik drum out the front and listen to it.... its major grainy and has one of those great litlle super nasty limiters on it so it just pumps like a mofo.... not good for all songs but definately useful none the less.

PEACE

I still have a 122mkII in the rack. It still gets used but not alot... I don't know, I still have a warm spot for cassettes. A well recorded cassette can have a really great kinda quality to it.

....Ahhhh, the good ole days playing handball behind the local super market...cassette "boombox" blasting out "Eruption" and "How many More Times"... convincing 'old folks' to buy us that $2 six pack -o- Mich's (Michelob). I'm getting all teary eyed just thinking about it ... ... carry on.

Someone brought a tape over for me to listen to a few months back (A marvelous parody of "Man Of Constant Sorrow" called "Man Of Constipation"), but other than that, I haven't used it in a couple of years.

I still have one hooked up to the patch ... can't remember even when it was last used ... but I leave it on there because the last 2 times I decided to take it out of the rack ... some dfegad stepped into the studio with a tape in his hands asking to play it back or put the mix onto it so he could listen to it in his car .... evileye evileye

I still have some empty tapes laying around somewhere too I think .... but heaven help if someone would ask for one ... wouldn't even know where to start looking ......

When we were moving the studio in August of 01, I found a Teac that I'm pretty sure works. It was covered totally with a 5 mil thick layer of dust. It was late and I was exausted from moving, and I wrote "SUCK" in the dust across the top. I found it a couple weeks ago, and the dust is so engrained into the paint, the word won't wipe off!

It doesn't really matter though, when clients call and ask, I usually tell them I don't own one. They go away feeling like the fossil they are, and I don't have to pull the thing out and clean it heh

Mine's a DA-45 (24 bit), but it still sits there in the rack and rots because of the Masterlink.

dfegad on DAT tape!

I use my DAT deck all the time. Whenever I mix I split from the console to 1/4" and a Mytek A/D. From the Mytek I feed AES to the DA-30MkII and the SPDIF goes to the computer.

Now cassettes OTOH I never use. The last time I got asked for a cassette of a rough mix was just over a year ago. The band was going to be away for a month and they wanted rough mixes of the project and I was asked for 2 CD's and a cassette. I had to go to K-Mart and buy a 2-pack. And I still have one of them!!! When I rewired the place last October I didn't even bother putting the deck back in the patch bay. It's around in case I need it but I'll grab some RCA to 1/4" cables and hook it up whenever it's needed. Which isn't too often.

I can't decide if I'm going to hook up a cassette deck in my new room. I did use it a few months ago. I did a jingle for a pawnshop that had a canned track on cassette. The tape was terrible, totally unbalanced in level and frequency, tons of hiss, what a nightmare. I see the commercial and just think "I'm glad commercials don't have credits!"

I do still use my DAT player. I mix to 1/4" and then take that mix to DAT to bring it home to master in the computer.

Jay, you should try this, that way you get a bit of the analog mix sound to DAT.

LOL, that is fun! I may print it all out, tape it together in one long banner, and hang it up for the holidays :-)

Wow, 2 1/2 or three years later it comes back from the dead!!!

I just finished putting my new room together and not only is there no cassette deck, but there's no DAT deck either. Funny, I still have a big 'ol Studer 2-track sitting about five feet away...that one gets used!!!

I just bitched at a band for sending me a demo of some new songs on cassette. I forgot I had a cassette player in my car stereo. heh

First time I used it.

Don't think it's a necessary piece of gear these days in the studio.

I use my decks fairly often. I've done vocal and percussion mixes on them
lately (no ECM sound). Me like.

I even got my DCC's (remember those?) running last year.
Won't be using them much....

Cassettes are the way for me in the car; when mine went South, I bought a NOS Blaupunkt on Ebay, and a box of Ampex cassettes.

I've dumped the breakdown section of a song to cassette and back; but I've probably done it too many times and should stop before it gets old.

Only reason I'm still keeping my around is for the fact that I supplement my income with audio restoration. I get these tapes from depositions and interrogation rooms that have old crappy recorders.

Lucky me gets to clean em' up so we can better hear just how the murderer "did it". tutt

Best! -Tweed

It was used once this year.

Thought about running my mix through it and back out into the Apogee AD16-x and into PT for that tape compression. heh

I used mine a few times this year. A client didn't want to pay the extra 50 cents per cd for a daily mix of his project.

just dumped mixes onto cassette for the first time in about oh, four years and you know what?

the client called and said: "Hey the cassette sounds weird and cut out to mono after about two minutes!" (which is strange because there were two channels metering on the deck.....oye!

I finally broke down & bought a cassette deck (Tascam Model 130) two years ago when a client offered me enough work dubbing his small cassette collection to CD to pay for not only my hourly dubbing rate but the tape deck itself.

The deciding factor though was the realization that I have a collection of my original music dating from 1973 through 1992 that exists exclusively on cassette, & if I ever was going to transfer those to a more robust medium without going broke I was going to have to do it myself.

Once or twice in the past couple years I have also used that deck as a quick slap echo during a mix. (A *very* quick slap...)

I own a couple of high quality portable cassette decks (Sony & Marantz) and they get used a lot for all sorts of things. The sound quality (with metal tapes and Dolby) is actually superb. Hopefully I'll be able to buy the tapes for a wee while yet!

Yes! I'd suggest a Sony or Marantz high quality portable. They both sound fantastic for cassette players and have all the features you'd need or expect.

Haven't had a cassette deck in the studio since 1999. It was a Tascam 122MKII.
I have one as part of the home stereo system I setup back in 1994. I'll use that on the very rare occassion one is needed. There are still 2 boxes of unopened Maxell metal cassettes stored away.

Everyones machines were biased differently and usually ran at slightly different speeds. Therefore, depending on the clients machine there was always a chance the rough mix wasn't being properly heard.
Back in the 80's when we were doing preproduction for a recording the demos would naturally come in on cassette. Figuring out the correct key and tempo was always the first step. Certainly don't miss them.
