Crickets in my SSL Alpha Link

Just installed my recently purchased SSL Alpha Link converter and have some seriously strange high frequency noises that sounds like crickets...

I have a Toft ATB board with 16 direct outs going to the Alpha Link on unbalanced TR to DSUB and 24 unbalanced returns coming from the Alpha Link to the monitor inputs on the ATB.

As soon as I turn up the monitor knobs there's noise. However, if I switch the I/P reverse there's no noise.

Is this a problem similar to a ground loop? And should this post be titled "crickets in my ATB"?

Or is there some kind of issue with running direct sound to the SSL and simultaneously monitoring the returns?

Any help is greatly appreciated

FWIW, in my experience "crickets" usually means there's a hard drive somewhere that's getting electrically into the system. If your HD's are external, try plugging them into a different circuit.

On a side note, my man bought a pair of STC 4033's off Ebay UK. We was headed to England anyway so decided to pick them up.

When he got around to testing them, he noticed a 'scratchy' intermitant sound. I gave them a go and encountered the same thing.

We sent them to get reribboned, and the tech told us that 'scratchy' sound was actually a cricket that had made the capsule home.

Hi!

It could be that you haven't star grounded your studio. There is a description in the Toft manual...

Best,
