I've used it for tracking mostly. It's such a nice board. Most of artists recording here express joy with the sound. I would say it's just nice and and organic sound. Use it with good dynamics and you get a punchy sound wich feels a bit more than real.
This is exactly my experience, too

Resurrection once more.. Sold the 169 and got a 269 16 channel version. Right now i take dir out trough Inserts, Post EQ and Post Fader. But im thinking about modify so Direct outs are after the preamp, before EQ and Fader.
Is there any of you 169/269 users out there who have tried both pre/post fader? Is there a difference in sound?

Haven't tried (yet), but I think I remember you get 10 dB extra gain post fader. Errr... That piece of information is somewhere on GS.

It's got a 2,4 and 6 dB boost or cut at 8kHz and 80Hz.
Plus an additive only high-mid, selectable between 1,5, 2,2, 3 and 4,4 kHz.

This EQ can't save if there is something wrong with your recording.
It can only do some broad "sweetening" strokes, and are really good at that.

They are truly high end mixers, not very flexible, but in a DAW world, more or less perfect.
Hi. Appreciate this is an old post but I'm considering buying an 089...
It doesn't have direct outs so wondered what you did to yours to make it compatible with a DAW?

Can the send / return be used to feed into the daw?

Many thanks

Is putting direct outs an easy option? Is it likely to cost a lot?
I've been offered this 089 for £2k. Good deal?

Hi
There are 'cheap and cheerful' ways to get a direct out but it will be at around -10dBu which is fine if you can set your convertors to that level. Probably unbalanced. If it is wired up CORRECTLY into a balanced input of a convertor then there is no big problem. Internal operating levels for MOST gear is usually less than the levels on the external connections (ins and outs) and can vary from -2 to -16dBu or even more.
You can add 'booster' amplifiers to increase level and balance the signal but this will alter the sound a little (depending on exact details) but the basic 'Studer' sound should remain.
With Studer gear the electronics is usually OK to get repaired if necessary but mechanical aspects, such as faders can use hardware only available from Studer.

Wow, insane cheap price, watch out a lot may need a lot of work and are not complete consoles just channels, having said that if you don't buy it PM me and I will!
