What's your favorite "go-to" bass compressor?

Curious, as well as your bass mixing approach, ie. parallel or not, etc.

Do tell.

is that one of the vac rac compressors? I've always wanted to hear one of them. How would you describe the sound of them?

Purple MC77. Generally I parallel compress with the original track going through my LTD-1 and then into one channel on my DBX 160SL (light comp only). Then it's paralleled via a send into another track which has the MC77 on it). Blend together. Sometimes I'll also send to another track with a SansAmp plug on it for a bit of distortion and blend that in as well.

Any of the Summit's do it for me- DCL200 is great and I have a soft spot for the TLA50 although it can be a bit noisy.

dcl-200 here....as just a blanket statement.....

for slower type stuff perhaps a good 160 vu.

but i was just trying to think of another to add and like 20 came to mind....

really i guess this depends on the bass, the song, the player, the amp and/or d.i.,

sorry to be a pisser....hard to answer simply.

interesting choice, do tell, why does that work so well for you? Over an 1176 or LA-2A or is that what's available to ya... if so, not too shabby.

But please share, what do ya like about it?

-a

P.S. I own one and it usually gets vocal duties (along with the 1176 and LA-2A)... too many duties, too few comps !

Bass compression in the mixdown?

2254,Sta-Level,Distressor,Inovonics,Altec,ADL,CL1B,SSL all can work.

Sometimes its a combination in parallel.

Sometimes just a Pultec EQ with automation is enough.

I have a dbx 160a in my live rig and it almost seems like it was tuned just for bass, they are amazing for bass.

In no particular order of preference. When one doesn't do it, one of the others usually will.

I patched in the LA-22 by mistake on the bass track in a mix. It stayed there and I've been using it quite a bit on bass since then.

Yeah, I own one as well. The stereo unit. I wish I had 8 more channels! I used to use one side of my Tubetech LCA-2b on bass, a distressor or an Altec 436B. All of which are amazing but the second I patched that Vacrac into my bass insert I was sold. Had to buy it for bass and lead vocals alone. It just has a "Thing," its very thick and the attack and release times could not be more perfect for bass and vocals.

Here is another great use for it. Since you have one try printing a mix back through it with the reduction all the way off. Set it so its barely reducing at the highest peak in the song. It's really got a "Fairchild Thing" about it then. Im not saying to use as a buss compressor, just to take the mix after it's printed for fun and throw it back through it. It smooths out all the top end dirt left over from some horrible mbox converter that was used somewhere along the way... You know, there is always some misc overdub or dubs in any record that screws up the overall shine in a mix.

Jeff.
