Here for the gear

1073DPA Hi-z

i use a U87ai on the 1073dpa should i use the Hi-z or Low-z for best result? i feel that when low it sounds a little brighter and clearer. what do other users think?
thanks

I don't have the u87... but i do have the m149... I use the hi-z.. and to my ears it sounds a little brighter than the other option... I have the dpd...

Check your u87 manual to see its output impedence and check it against the 1073, the closer the better as a general rule of thumb. My guess is LoZ would be a closer match!

On the mic input the LoZ is 300ohms and the HiZ is 1200 ohms

Line is set to 20k ohms just in case you wanted to know

Odd!! The only way I'd see this happen is if you are record something with very high SPL's. I could be totally wrong though!!

different mics will react to different impedances better/worse than others.

i've found that the U87 tends to like the low impedance setting more on the 1073. definitely sounds more open that way.

High Z works best for me on the 1073 DPA/U87ai combo.

Low Z may be initially seductive, but actually it's just louder and the high end gets flappy and more fragile. That's my experience anyway. When you normalise comparative files then the high z feels firmer and more sold.
