Best sounding converters for MADI (optical or not)

Hi all!

I would to add converters through the MADI inputs of my Metric Halo boxes.
Any Idea?
Metric Halo has come up with different optional edge cards
- 2 MADI optical (in/out)
- 4 MADI coaxial (in/out)
- 1 MADI optical (in/out) + 1 MADI coaxial (in/out)

Not finding much apart from :

Ferrofish A16 ................................................1100€ 16 chan
Ferrofish A32 ................................................1750€ 32 chan
Mytek 8 X 192 ADDA incl. MADI DIO Card .........2300€ 8 chan

I tried out quiet some converters about 8 months ago. We decided for the new RME m32 AD pro. It sounds fantastic an d we never regret it. It has MADI and AVB.

Best regards, Marcus

i'm mainly using studer and euphonix converters and some from rme and ssl - but why no use existing adda converters and use a digital format converter if you want/need to go to madi?

Thanks Markus !
RME M32 AD Pro looks like a solid option.
I'll check that more in details.
It's missing DA though but we could do without...before buying the M32 DA Pro

Why not?
I'm just looking at options adding to my box another 8/16/32 ADDA the most convenient way (quality and cost both matters)

Buying other Metric Halo boxes (LIO8) and connect them to the first box cat6 is still a good option (2000€ 8 channel...and it adds more DSP to my system 250€/cha) probably the best solution but not the cheapest/channel

RME M32 is a bit big for me 16 channels ADDA would do. I don't need 40 total
Cost is a bit lower at 217/ch ADDA. and the possibility to use it with avb is cool

I'm more than happy with my RME ADI-8 QSM ... there's nothing that I don't hear

No Mytek 8X192 or Ferrofish users?

and I forgot to mention ... using the madi option allows you to use all inputs / formats at the same time (analog + AES/EBU + ADAT)

in my setup it's the analog channels together with a tc system 6000 (4x4 stereo AES/EBU). The ADATs allow further expansion.

i see... - didn't get to try the newer rme madi converters: i'm using 3 qsm and the older da-32 and da-16 (the latter i'd sell rather cheap).

maybe you wanna check directout technologies' andiamo converters: imo on the same level as rme but more dense channel count (32 adda in 1hu).

(i don't give much about audio over ip (yet) as it's often been more of a drag than added value but for sure it's more 'future-proove')

We use these in our OB trucks.
They're Lawo equiped, but we use these as extra I/O. I don't hear a clear difference between these and the much more expensive Lawo D/A and A/D.

Under 3000 for a 32ch AD/DA that's a good price if it sounds good !
Actually 2300 without VAT (I don't pay VAT)

It is.

But factor in some cost to go from Dsub to whatever connector you need.

Of course, and also the madi ext card for the Metric Halo which is on sale at the moment.
It looks it has both MADI optical/coax
Would love to demo one

Ah I missed a couple on the used market recently ... I wasn't sure how good it was. They don't come up very often in my neck of the wood. A shame that was dirt cheap! ($300/pce)

I'm thinking it's going to be hard for me to demo the Andiamo 2
(I'll ask a friend who's a tech manager in a big broadcasting co., who knows maybe they have some units)

Has anyone compared it with other converters in pro audio?
like avid i/o, RME, lynx, apogee?

As I'm sure the Lawo ADDAs sound splendid (I've encountered their pres) but never heard them

Thank you!

To be honest, I think all decent higher level converters sound very good (that is, they put out exactly what you put in)

I'd be surprised if someone could hear the difference between Lawo, RME and DOtec in a double blind test.

Besides the RME, the SPL Madison is a good choice.

The Euphonix are good but are ticking time bombs. They are very old since last being manufactured and the clocking crystal modules will die eventually and there are no more replacement parts for that unit (we had some of the first System 5 consoles ever made so were on the forefront of what is to come for the hardware as it ages.) If you get them cheap, they may last a few years and you'll get your money's worth.
Still, I have a friend who bought an S5 with 6 of the converter boxes 5-6 yeas ago. Secured some of the clocking modules while they were still available for future repair but now there is no more stock to be found.

Same for the SSL Alpha Link AX/SX boxes. We have a closet full of partially working (some channels have stopped) to fully dead (won't clock to incoming or self-clock) boxes. Those lasted a lot less time than expected and were abandoned by SSL a lot faster.

Thanks for the info! They're pretty old pieces that's for sure..they're super cheap on the used market though !

It seems that the dotec andiamo 2 is a good compromise price/reliability wise..

I have 4 different sets of converters.
SSL alpha link, Black lion mod -MADI
RME QS8 -MADI
Burl B2 -AES
Audient 008 -SMUX

RME MADI FX card.
Audient through RME
Burl direct to FX card

Black lion MK3 clock master.

Burl is the best sounding input
QS8 is the fast, good for use with E-drums with other converters off.
I like the SSL sound a bit more than then QS8.
The SSL units sounds best with that clock and is the largest amount of converters.

The SSL before black lion mod was not the best sounding. External clock on that unit really helps.

The next thing will be Forsell or Burl output converters.

Have the same experience. Clocking RME MADI FX and alphalink SX to QES Pad 2 mkII and have no desire to change. SX also have 24 channels AES which is very convenient for HW reverbs etc.

I have 4 of the euphonix convertors and when the clocking stopped on the clock input I used the aes clock input and they've been fine since
