When order on the playground has been restored, the average bully has enough sense not to loudly complain about it.

I’m looking to replace my Daking mic pre with a tube pre to match my Chandler TG mic. Which one should I go for? Chandler it’s bright but I Also don’t wanna sound dark and lifeless. Debating between the ca70s and 286s

Had a local buddy bring his TG over and we spent the afternoon running it through the CA-70. It did not sound dark and lifeless.

The CA70 is not dark.
It is not lifeless.
Playing with the negative feedback brings all sorts of fun to the party.
The 286 has that forward pentode harmonic thing to it.
It can get in your face in a different way then the CA70 never will.
Two different tools. That’s why I think it’s good to have both....

I can’t wait to buy these expensive, simple circuits, used for 1/2 price in 5 years. I’m sure they sound fantastic.

1/2 price? Lol. You're dreaming man. Unless its in terrible shape. Just buy one and make music. Personally I think they'll hold their value entirely.

When reading the lengths people are going to receive a discount .... waiting 5 years... makes my head spin.

It's OK; I can take it

I've got other tube options to make music with. There are only so many ways to configure a tube and transformer.

I'm sure these are seriously badd-asss, and this is the "money no object" section.

Every flavor has its day. Right now, tubes are BACK. I can wait...

Yeah I’m not a hype man myself.
However the coils do sound fantastic and it’s not hype.

YES!!!

I'm sure you're right. Not suggesting hype. I'm just not willing to pay this price w/o manifest time invested in R&D and innovation. I don't see it here with these implementations.

...but I'm not full-time,so the Return On Investment is very different for me.

Rock on, and I'll stop drinking and typing!

Coil sounds Nice but for this budget I get 2 Siemens V72 “Used” And eqpKT. 2200 vs coil 2100 euro. Enough gain for large condensers. not the same sound I know.

Apparently there are some delays with the transformer supplier right now, but hey, that’s covid for you. Can’t wait to put it to use when it does arrive!!
Did your CA70s arrive? If so, what do you think?

Hasn’t arrived yet, vintage king said it looks like it’ll come early February. Will update after I’ve received and played around with it!

I just got mine 6 weeks ago, 286 and CA-70, they're amazing. 286 is a bit more hi-fi, 70 is thicker with a lot of character. Both have immense detail and depth which is what I like most about them, the 3d ness they bring.

Posted this track in the Chandler REDD Mic thread couple or so weeks ago. However, I used the Coil CA70 pre into the REDD Mic on lead vox so I think it makes for a good Coil Audio sample as well.

I wonder how the Mercury M72 fits onto this elite shelf of tube pre's?

I would very much like to get a tube pre for vocals as an alternative to my BAE 1073.
I have a Millennia (Fred Forssell designed) tube pre which is very hi-fi and has huge headroom but very little character,
though sometimes that's a good thing.

I was learning towards a Mercury M72 just because it has the pedigree and kinda industry standard about it.
But the CA-70 seems to fits the bill and the NF and EQ tilt controls really appeal for shaping the sound.
I think the Coil 286 being an EF86 design probably crosses over with the Mercury M72 (also EF86 based)

As soon as lockdown ends I'm going to try to get a demo of these pre's to try out.

Can anyone comment on the sonic differences between the CA-70 and the Retro 500pre?
