Box 2 is same concept. Fill it up over time.
Edit. You can get a lot of utility done with plugins these days!
Some of the top eingieers doing that - might be better off than Mackie EQs
Here we go with the Mackie slamming. There isn’t anything wrong with that eq hits were made using it. So that’s not a hindering factor

I’m not slamming mackie don’t care what you use to make your hits just don’t think many people on the high end forum are using them for mixdown and certainly not talking about them in their console thread.

I love the Mackie EQ and sound in general. I'd mix on it; even label work if it didn't require much recalling... otherwise, I'm going to need an SSL. But I certainly wouldn't knock the Mackie's sound; it's way easier to get a big pro sound on a Mackie than ITB for me.

I actually was just looking at these yesterday - some songs/artists I have been digging coming out of Silo Studios in Denver and EchoLab in Denton Texas are all mixed on one of these. I went down a rabbit hole last night - it seems they are great sounding but repairs can be a pain as a lot of their builds are proprietary parts??? Not sure if that is true.

OK. It's been a year and a half since this thread started. Time to either $#!* or get off the pot. If you were going to do it, it would have been super easy to find a decent console. They DO take a commitment -- Money, time, space, logistics, tech support, etc.. Either you got what it takes or you don't. Either way is OK.

So what's it going to be? Do I have to keep coming back to this tattered thread for another year to see if you did it???

I'm negotiation for a mid range mixer right now. If this one falls though will break down and get a GB2R. I only found one that met all my requirements and price range that would be better then a GB2R.

The GBR2 is a "small cheap mixer". But I'm a home studio guy that does not have enough budget to fall into the group of people this other thread is about:

It's an ongoing conversation because there are new people who consider this option all the time. They come here and read what people are thinking and doing, ask questions, etc.

I know. But the OP - @ TheHolyMountain keeps coming on here and teasing that he's going to buy something.....but never does. Par for the console buying course I guess....

It makes much more sense to have one large thread vs. a bunch of small ones. How many threads are there asking for a good vocal mic at a specific price point?

I am currently shopping for a mid range mixer. Only people who have already been through using the mid range and moved on to the high end will have good information and opinions.

I am located in central Nebraska. Without driving 4 hours, can't really go test out existing mixers if people were open to it with the stuff going on in the world right now. So here I am asking for advice.

I was active running a studio from about 1996 to 2002 running ADAT's. I become a tracking house for Heavy metal and Rap. Bottom of the barrel stuff. Was using an O2R and A&H at the time. Then sold everything. Before that run I was using a Tascam 16 track mixer/reel and had a Peavy 1000 Unity for live

About six years ago, I started collecting gear again and became active here.
I have put together a decent home system for creating my own music. But when it came time to jam with other's I decided it was time to have a traditional analog mixer.

So here I am looking for a mixer looking for good advice. I thought I had found the mixer I wanted, but think the deal is going to fall through.

Here are my requirements:
Under $5K to my door, no need for a tech to get it running
Rack mount 19"
At least 8 channels, 16 would be nice
EQ with at least 1 sweep, much prefer 2 sweeps out of 3 or 4 bands (on each of 8+ input)
Direct outs on at least 8 inputs
At least 4 Aux sends for outboard (At least
pair one can be used in stereo)
DB25 connectivity is ok or all XLR. Don't care. Have DB25 patch bays
Inserts-don't care -patch bay
Monitor/talk back section-don't care - Have Dangrous ST and Little labs monitor.

The one I wanted was a BB100 configured just this way in mint condition. Amek EQ would have been an upgrade from the EQ on a GB2R that is currently winning the race.

Others I have found in the range:
apb dynasonics prorack But hear these run hot and fail.
Toft: Hear these have all kind of failure problems at an alarming rate. Also not rack mount, that I have found yet.
ASHLY MX-508. No sweep on the EQ, no faders another minus
Midas F16R analog mixer ---strong contender
Soundcraft GBR2 My current base line and winning for my case. Can be found used for $500 and New for $1100
SSL X-desk EQ very limited but great in every other way. Like the DB25's
SSL six No EQ, not 8 channels.

It seams like the GB2R is prefered over A&H mix wizzard, or any A&H in general.

once over that range of stuff, the bottom end of real mixers are API the box where 500 series stuff is added over time.

Another rout is the LiLo stuff that does not have and EQ either.

My work flow for this is as a jamming mixer to show other musicians how the room/live/sources sounds together with EQ to train them to change the sounds of the Guitars to better work together in the room. Also as a scratch pad to hear stuff together before breaking out the outboard preamps/converters and using the computer.

Would get used for small live gigs as well.

When mixing, it would get used as a sub mixer for effects that need EQ on the return and as part of any built up side chains.

So in a nut shell. Looking for a mixer better than a GB2R and not finding much.

The one rout I have not dug into yet is going all 500 series. Most 500 series stuff is more then $500 per function. 8 preamps and EQ in 500 is over budget.

So yeah, this may not really fit into the high end. But this is not a low end question either.

Have you considered an 8-channel Soundcraft DLX?

That's a good option.

The option of the BB100 is also available at a much higher price point. It is nice to have options.

The question becomes, what's the better EQ. Is a Soundcraft BB100 worth 4 times the cost of a Soundcraft Delta?

The BB100 is really an AMEK EQ
The Delta is a brit made Soundcraft EQ

Having never used a BB100 I have to assume the AMEK eq's are significantly better by the selling prices of each model. Still not a Neve, API, SSL, or Trident. But to get those EQ's on a mixer costs a minimum of $15,000

Others might get more mileage out of a console, but it would be a waste of money and floor space for me. I record my band, individual friends, and my own projects, including drums, and I've never maxed out all of my input options. I've got 16 XLR inputs and another 17 ¼" inputs between my RME interfaces and various preamps, all in one rack. It works. I do wish I had tactile faders for mixing, but a console would be overkill. Even a small mixing board would just be more junk to clutter up my desk that I don't really need to be productive.

A very interesting, long and winding thread, complete with the sword fights and angular opinions (this is after all GS). Interesting because I've somewhat agonised over this decision on and off for years.

Full disclosure - been doing this a long time. First console in what was then a budding home studio era 1985. Mixing consoles multi track tape. Build and managed a small commercial studio. Been through the ADAT thing, .....Fast forward - 2005 - onward - went 100% ITB, save for high end front end for tracking. For the past seven years, SSL Nucleus (which I absolutely love BTW).

Still, there is that nagging feeling - I really do want a console. Why? For me it might be eye-candy, nostalgia, lust as someone mentioned, this and those meters - having ALL of the tracks splay horizontally across the surface. Yeah!. In the process I've been thorough the whole cycle that runs though this thread, mid-market consoles - API Box, Audient, SSL X Desk, Trident, SSL Matrix (which I'll come back to), and gasp - the used market. Each time, I hesitate. Will the whole summing thing give me more analogue "warmth, cream" etc? Sure - more so with the API and perhaps trident - SSL and Audient being rather on the clean side. Then there's the wow factor. Do I miss a console? Yes!. Do I lust after one? Yes again. Do I need one? No.

Over the past 15 years since going ITB, I am amazed at the quality - if of course, I manage levels and my front end is high end :-). Automation - I could never go back. Recall, hundred of options, clean. No maintenance. Then there is hybrid - the SSL Matrix which keeps tugging at me. I keep all of the advantages of my DAW workflow, add the ability to use analogue outboard as I wish. Then again - even there, there are all of the often overlooked costs (so well articulated in this thread). The Matrix, let's say goes for about 17k€ here in EU. Then - there are the cables, outboard, maybe furniture. You quickly get to near double that. The Box, SSL X Desk, already into the high 20's. Is that really worth it?. Now the used market? Yep, I see all of those adds "just re-capped by Joe's Gear Bazaar, there's one knob that's broken on channel 10 and the VU meter on the right side only works when you kick the console a certain way with your foot, but otherwise in tip-top shape". Sounds like a world of hurt unless you are a tech. Cost-wise maybe the easiest is the Audient - but that's clean or the Trident - but there again, am I buying a bunch of pre'qs I'll never use.?

For me, I keep coming back to no, but I hedge ever so slightly. Matrix, Trident, Audient? Finally, a question I ask myself. A lot has been said in this thread about maintenance and repairs, but also another truth - you buy a new desk, it's value drops like a rock. Do I risk the used market and pick up an 18k desk for 9k - or do I go new, tell myself I'm good for the next 5 years or so? Still......hedging, ever so slightly.

Pulled trigger on Soundcraft BB100 Small configuration. 10 mono 2 stereo input. Unused mint.

Will take a while for it to show up. Should be a huge step up from everything I have owned in the past: Tascam (80's 16 track), Peavy unity 1000 16tr, A&H 16tr, O2R w/4 ADATs. Out of those the A&H was the best sound but the EQ's were not grabby enough.

The Peavy was good for a thing that weighed like 5 Lbs. Nice for small live gigs and got some great recordings out of it to a Sony tape deck

Plan on selling all my lower end rack preamps for space and use the preamp on the mixer more for ease of use.

This is gonna be fun deciding how the mixer goes with 24 input vintage maker summer. The first config will be 4 connections from mixer to summer (L, R, C, Mono), Then feeding a B2. Considering a Par of ZOD DI inbetween,

Went through the same conflict. Check out page one of this thread on how it turned out. My biggest fear was buying an electronics project instead of a mixer. Found a 20 year old virgin for 10 cents on the dollar. I will NEVER regret it. Loving it for 4 years now.

Here is some real porn of a Quantum Audio Labs Console that I restored a few years back...Sold it to a friend who started working with a studio in NC.

I upgraded the output transformers to Cinemag and it opened the bottom and the top end of the console. Jim Williams upgraded the master, monitor, headphone modules that cleared out any noise and I had the armrest recovered and new cherry wood all around. This console can have up to 22 mono input ch's and it has some stereo input modules that came with it..I found more mono ch's so it has 16 mono and the rest stereo ch's. cool little footprint console.. Sounded good ..transformer ins and outs.

I have this analog delay and a distortion generator that is great on vocals. I have the Waves Renaissance Bundle and the R-Vox is my favorite compression for vocals.

I do have a couple 2 inch tape decks one is from slate digital it’s called the VTM. It’s good, if I remember to take a picture of it I’ll post it for more gear porn action!

That’s a super clean Q-Labs console, I currently have a few Vintage/Old consoles Not including my digital Protools console. Here’s some pictures of my main console that I completely refurbished and upgraded. I also completely refurbished my JH-24 but that’s for another thread.

It’s an Mci 428 from 1976. I completely recapped and serviced this console. The bag of caps below is every capacitor from this board all replaced now. It also has all new eq switches, new relays on daughter boards for easy replacement, new assignment switches, recapped & upgraded the power supplies, all new lights including LED’s, etc...

The master section has been upgraded with Inward Connection SPA-690 Opamps and I have 8 of the input channels with 990 Opamps there’s 7 per channel. I have enough to do the entire console but I like the original Opamps too. It has old Jensen transformers in it as well.

It took me some time and effort to overhaul this console but I enjoy doing that type of work and it was more then worth it.

It’s super quiet and has great head room. I’ve had no issues with it going on 4 years now. I get a lot of enjoyment out of my consoles.

Yes... I don’t think imho he built It but looks rather like a custom broadcast one that might have been built for a truck.

4 channel bucket is defo a custom order as well as the remote patch.

That is pretty much a perfect console for me nowadays. Anything bigger is a waster.. damn I can get by with 24 channels .. just!

i may be an exception here, but for me...the one time i really want a console is when i'm tracking and overdubbing.

at this point in the game, i'm pretty happy mixing in the box totally as long as what i lay down during tracking is done right.

when i really want a desk in front of me is when tracking a live band. being able to buss multiple mics down to a single or stereo track, sending headphone cues, and working quickly is why i want a console.

it feels frustrating and time consuming when trying to track, especially a live band, solely in the box with cues coming from the daw. i just find it cumbersome and not very creative.

on a console, i can quickly add some mics to something, but get them down to one track. i absolutely hate getting to a mix and having 3-6 mics on the same performance. it's just pointless to me.

i also love being able to quickly get a mix on a console when doing overdubs and quickly changing out or muting parts while i am overdubbing stuff.

what i love about mixing in the box is being able to try anything, and then being able to wipe it all out instantly and go back to what i had before.

i love just sort of massaging a session over time and living with that mix a bit before committing.

there just simply aren't the budgets or time these days to do that sort of mixing on a console.

i'm setting up a new room now and i think i'm going to hang on to my huge yamaha pm2k for just this reason. i will use it solely for tracking and once most of the parts are laid down, i'll stay completely in the box for mixing except for maybe an analog stereo buss chain.

Very nice, I take back my blowup doll comment now....hehe

I had a motherboard full of those MCI output transformers like on your console..I sold some of them off over the years but believe I have some still on the board if you ever need any..

I bet your upgrade of the op amps opened up the top end of that console?

Very nice pictures !!

I am trying to find the before photo of my Q-labs console .I found it for really cheap on ebay and a friend drove and picked it up for me in NY. It looked really beat with ugly black fake wooden sides that were busted up and missing some input modules..and the armrest were two separate armrest because the console is actually two mixers joined together so they each had their own finished black armrest. I decided to make it all one armrest and used spray foam to fill in the gap in between them and then the owner of the closest upholstery shop which turned out to be the former owner of a bar that my bands played in over the years came over to my studio with some samples of his coverings so I could match the color to the knobs of the console..His guy did a great job with it too..It was his first console armrest job..hehe I will find that old photo someday and post it.
