SSL AWS Sub hookup

Hey everyone!

Long time browser, first time (I think) poster here!

I recently got myself an SSL AWS 900+ SE and have been stumped with how to hook up the sub. I understand I could send Left and Right output through the sub and then out to the mains, which I have an Adam sub8 capable for the job. But switched over to a larger velodyne home theatre sub about 6 months ago and have been getting much better results with my mixes. I was running all my monitoring through a Dangerous Monitor ST, and was able to send straight to mains, then have the sub on its own output with an on off switch for the sub. I'm not too keen on the idea of passing the signal for my mains through unbalanced RCA's on the sub. And the sub doesn't have a bypass/on:off switch anyways. If I have to, I'll probably go back to my smaller Adam sub to make it work this way for now.

I've talked to a few people familiar with the SSL AWS, and everyone I've discussed this with have told me that the LFE output is only for 5.1 setups. But, I have a hard time believing that the SSL monitoring system isn't capable of running a stereo setup, with the sub output putting out a filtered mono signal to the sub.

Any thoughts?

Cheers,
Dave Pugh

P 4-19 to 4-24 in the manual detail the various monitoring and bass management options.

I think you just need to connect Left and Right to the appropriate outputs on the Main Monitor Outputs and then the Sub to the relevant LFE output. Then switch on BMN in the BASS management options (and possibly LF0 to set the LFE gain to 0dB rather than +10dB) The Centre, LS and RS outputs are not used.

This will put 80 Hz High Pass Filters in the Left and Right monitor outputs and a 80 Hz Low Pass Filter in the LFE output. So you don't need the filtering that the 'through' connections in the sub provide.

The AWS monitoring is very flexible, but it is complex when you get in deep. Luckily it should remember all this once configured!
