You might be surprised.
If you could that, it would be great!

I don't know if the KM84s vary much from mic to mic, but from most of the clips I've listened they seem to sound quite different than the "transparent" fast and a bit "unmusical" character of the M60s.

Can't wait to listen to your shootout though!

Check out a pair of Neumann KM84s or KM 86s.

To me, they are some of the most versatile, fantastic sounding SDC mics ever made.

Nah, the 84's are pretty darn consistent. I wouldn't call the M60's unmusical at all. But to each their own! I'll try to make the shootout happen!

Let's do this blind.

One is a mint KM84, the other an M60.

Both through an Aurora GTQ-2 -> B2 Bomber. Level Matched.

Let your ears decide!

Wow, they sound really close!

I prefer slightly Mic B.
First one has a metallic quality which doesn't sound very musical to me, so I guess that s the M60?

Both sound very good !!

I agree, A sounds a bit metallic. There is less bottom and shy highs.

The metallic character reminds me of the KM184, the bottom end of the Elam 260 though.

B is more extended in the low and high frequencies. And here the highs behave like I know them from Tele 260. A bit brighter and sparkly.

But I never used the km 84 and m60, only their “siblings” so to speak.
Based on the highs/mids , I’d say A is Neumann and B is M60.
If the mics are not in the exact same position and point to the exact same spot of the instrument, sound changes the especially the low frequency behavior more than often.

I prefer B, a bit more body and presence (warmth), i would guess that's the Km84. It just feels right. The other one sounds good but has some more treble and is colder.

Prefer B on this particular sound source but can imagine preferring A on others. They both seem a little boosted in the high mids, but the boost on the A mic is at a lower frequency, while the B mic has a boost up higher that makes the guitar sound more open, and makes the pick noise a little less objectionable (it's bad on both.)

I've had a pair of Soyuz SU-13 for almost a year now... and everybody likes their sound on almost any source you throw at them. They are detailed but warm... compared to schoeps, they won't get that bright when gutars are strummed hard or cymbals are played loud (but don't have that level of detail).
They also sound a bit sweeter than KM184s.

BUT THEY ARE NOISY AS HELL!! I can not recommend them for low volume acustic instruments.

I prefer B, which I think is probably the KM84.

Pretty big difference there. "B" comes across as warmer, smoother, fuller, and more balanced.

B sounds a lot better to me! A seems to have weird "metallic" sounding high frequency resonances going on.

I'd love to know the result of this

Mic A = KM84
Mic B = M60

I should also mention that I prefer B in this application. Note it was a lower end Taylor guitar... kind of known for a lot of people not liking their higher frequency sounds... Interesting that the KM84 seemed to exaggerate this. Normally the 84 wins 9/10 times. But I also thought the T-funk was better for this guitar.

Thanks for the comparisons with the Soyuz and the Telefunken.

For classical, I still prefer a neutral and realistic mic like the Schoeps. I can still add some character in post.

But I can see why these Soyuz mics can be attractive in other genres.

Just going by what I heard in your comparison, I would say the M60 is almost a bargain. Certainly a good buy at least. Would love to hear the omni capsule.
And, from what I heard of that 84, well, I won't comment on the price/performance ratio there. Glad you like it anyway.
Thanks for the comparison. very enlightening.

This is very enlightening in a totally different way than i expected though...
A friend of mine is looking for a new acoustic guitar and a lower end Taylor was up high on the list of potential guitars that are available localy. This made me very aware of what to listen for
