DAT Sony PCM 2300

Hi. Have a DAT Sony PCM 2300 - door opens - tapes won't engage / play.

- 48kHz 16bit dat format - is it worth repairing?

- Have alot of DAT tapes I'd like to digitize

- 24 bit DAT too expensive? Is it viable today?

Thanks / Brewer

I have just been through the same process with my Sony PCM R300. Load of old DAT tapes I needed to recover but old DAT machine not accepting them. I sent mine to Paul Carrington:

Technical Services — Paul Carrington

He did an excellent job for a very reasonable price. I would recommend him to anyone with DAT problems.

Cheers

Might be cheaper and easier to trash can it and find a used working machine.
DAT machines are close to worthless now so i'm sure you could find a cheap one.

It cost me £35 to get mine serviced and aligned. It now works better than ever and has successfully recovered tapes I made back in the 90s when the DAT was new. I think it would be a big risk to try buying a second hand one for that price and hoping it works as well as a properly serviced one

They are not worthless, but only the good ones are worth something. Like the Sony Esprit models.

Nothing wrong with DAT at all, use the format still daily together with RtR. Seem the only one who has not reinvented it and kept using it when everyone stopped using it. Cant get use to recording behind a computer screen i guess haha.
