CS Avocet II or HA RAM5000?

Hi all,
I’m in the process of researching an upgrade for my monitor control system.

Specifically a controller with integral DAC. At the moment the Crane Song Avocett II and Grace Design m509 look like best candidates for short list. And then there is the Heritage Audio RAM5000...

Any ideas how the Heritage Audio and Cranse Song/ Grace compare, especially the DAC? Theres very little info on the HA to be found...

Tips and thoughts much appreciated!

I'd suggest to get the two units in your studio (cranesong and grace) and compare them there..

another option might be the 2400 audio imperium..

Hi Cheu,
thanks for that!
Yes, that's the ultimate I admit...

I realize I made mistake in my question: I was hoping anyone had experience with the Heritage Audio RAM 5000 system

That's one that I need to import form elsewhere, which makes it a bit of a hassle to test it.

Definitely going to look in to the Emperium! Thanks for the tip,

Best

Avocet R.I.P. by a stroke 1 week ago.
i replaced it with RAM 5000.

ok here we go:
AVOCET II

- solid
- solid sounding Relais
- METERs but Mix Output is Jack
- many Options for leveling
- cable based remote, not happy with the knobs(not responding)
- neutral Sound
- 3 Speaker Outs
- 5.1 Needs another unit to upgrade to

RAM 5000

- lighter weight as AVCT
- Relais sounding thinner
- no meters, BUT XLR Mix Output preFader
- direct Access from avocet mostly hidden in shift+knob (mono, Phase etc.)
- Radio based remote - chilling on the Sofa is now possible
- Sound(as it follows the AVCT) is not different from AVCT mixes in the future will proove it or not
- 5 Speaker Outs
- 5.1 possible directly(inclusive Bass MGMT)
- KILLER: BluTooth direct Connection possible from Handy, Tablet etc.

i will post Sound stuff when i finished few first mixes on it.

I bought the Grace after auditioning both the Avocet as well.

They are both excellent and my choice mainly came down to being able to order the Grace and to receive it within a few days.
The waiting list for a new Avocet was weeks or months from any UK dealer.

If I am honest the Avocet has the slight edge sonically but it is a tiny difference and I haven't regretted my decision.

Hi all,

now a few days later i can post my personal experience within:

DO BUY the Avocet!!!!

Sorry for being euphoric at first - the avocet is 2 Chan only, wired and expensive.

BUT 1st criteria: IT SOUNDS PERFECT.

I never had something different than Avocet as Monitor distribution controller. Now i need to get it repaired really soon. I cant mix on RAM, certainly not.
Here is a list:
- Sound - fancy highs- moody Bass
- Metering/Display; that is terrible, no possibility to read, too fast backlight goes off. No Level-Meter at all.
- turning volume often causes glitches/klicks
- overall any changes causes klicks in all outs, even if all is muted
- Out 2 is reserved to subwoofers... so my three speaker stereo-pairs have out 1 3 and 4...
- AES does not lock, and no further settings possible
- Remote crashes, the display will display real weird CHA-Characters ramdomly
- they forgot one screw in the top case.. ok this was only a optical hassle...i dont give anything about that.
- in case of radio-remote, turning volume can cause unexpected volume steps up(woaaahh!!) - driving me mad.

So the unit is a good idea, but .... i dont know what to say...."i want my avocet back!"

maybe i am used to Avocet

the resolution in the highs wins an oscar for dave....really.

at the moment it is plugged in to keep me recording stuff.

Hi David,
Many thanks for your experiences with the RAM! And sorry to hear that the unit wasn’t functioning up to spec. Kind of surprises me, HA is usually up to spec in my experience.

Sound wise, you write moody bass and hyped highs. I assume that in your experience with the Avocet, the Avocet is more neutral in that respect?
And again I assume you were using the DA on both?

Thanks again and hope u get your Avocet up to scratch again!

Cheers Kees

HI,

MEANWHILE I GOT A FULL EXCHANGE FROM SAE!

The unit does not longer stuck with chinese symbols in display...

screws are all in

the sound is better now, AND this unit follows the turn very accurate(much more relais-clicking)... maybe a fault when busy with errors at that last control unit.

So now its only a few issues left:

turning causes volume jumps, i do not accept... if you turn the knob on avocet that rough... it just skip the turn and let jour ear survive....

the display is useless

clicks even if is all muted when changing anything....

SOUND reviewed:

its not that bad.... i would have blamed that powersource --- maybe it needs one day to accomodate - it is strange

BUT it sounds very HiFi in comparison to the AVCT.

i will write again in few weeks cause ill go back tomorrow to the AVCT

good night

We have 3 RAM2K and everyone is happy
It's a bit clumsy with the cables on the desk but soundwise it's fantastic no issues.
Extended clear low end, precise levels, great BT connection idea for phones, and the digital in is one of the best I've heard so far.

Thanks all again!

Well, 2019 has come, and I guess I'm going to pull the trigger soon.
I've been able to organize a loan on a RAM 5k via Thomann in Germany for a month. And will see if I can do a similar deal for the Avocet. Hopefully this will work out OK.

Will post again once I get the system in an up and running.

interested to hear your thoughts once you've had some time with them both.
Im in the market and the 3 contenders are the Grace, Crane Song and Heritage. I've had concerns about the build quality and sound(especially the D/A) of the heritage

I just received my Second ram 5k. My first unit was a mess. Clicks, pops, every button pushed made a noise. Then I had a very digital high frequency noise. I hit the digital button and at around 140 DB, wushhh. Surprised it didn’t kill me monitors. Recivied my second unit. The wireless remote is not wireless. Dead. Only works plugged in. The lcd is useless. The talk back is horrible. Maybe due the the Bluetooth connection to the main rack. Not happy after re wiring my studio to make thei work. Do I go round three??? Jezzzzz
