from those I just tried the Avalon and the Voxbox and decided for the Voxbox because of a bigger rounder tone and a nice Manley limiter.

Tab Funkenwerk v78? I try to navigate there site but I can't tell what I'm looking at half the time, I did email Oliver and he said he still rebuilds V72's but doesn't rack them anymore, is the v78 an old Telefunken pre or is it there own product? I tried my friends Soundelux 251c through a v72 with a neumann W495 and I've been wanting that set up ever since.

I'd have to recommend the Telefunken v72 single channel racked can be had for 1200-1500, saw a couple modules on ebay recently, my opinion might not matter to much as I only tried it on 1 track. But fwiw it was a hiphop track and this set up is really good for a darker more passionate tone in that regard (regard being hiphop music).

My vote goes to HCL Affinity a2. I have a Manley Mono Pre and I stopped using it after I got the Affinity. All-tube. And only around a grand for 2(!) channels! thumbsup If you are looking for more than just a pre (like VoxBox) HCL Solution leveller is also just over a grand. So for just over $2K you can have 2 all-tube channels of pre and compression. I believe they also make a vocal channel called Velvet (or something) with compressor and EQ but I don't know how much it is. My guess is under $2K. E-mail HCL.

I don't know what the best tube pre is, but I'd be really surprised if you bought a Telefunken v72 pre and were disappointed.

I bought 2 and then bought 2 more and they're practically the only pres I own. Kind of a narrow-minded viewpoint, but when I go to my favorite Italian restaurant, I order what I ordered last time cuz it was pleasing.

I got some quad eights just to add some solid state attitude to my spice rack.

I could try the v76, but I'd rather get 4 more v72s than 2 more 76.

2 cents,

i think it's a tab design loyal to the telefunken v78 pre with some updates. seems like a pretty good value at $1,100.

you won't be sorry with UA 2-610, even as you move on to more boutique tube preamps you will always find these useful.

Good luck!

DW Fearn Rocks!

Another vote for DW Fearn. It's got this uncanny ability to smooth out harsh sources and while still delivering crystal clear highs. Absolutely stunning on bass with a good DI in front of it.

BLUE Robbie MicPre is worth looking into, even if you're not into their mics. A very clean sound and simple design.

P.S. B&H is them for $600.00 Probably a mistake since every other online company has listed at $1000.00

Yeah, a Blue KIWI mic plus a free Robbie pre (this month only) for $2K is a great deal.

Another vote for the Summit TPA 200.
There is wide range of sound for a pre amp.
It saturates beautifully.

That's because it is gigantic!!!! 6 tubes or some crazy **** like that! That is one book you can judge by it's cover. Sounds as cool and big as it looks and feels. I want one... LIKE BAD!!!!!

I love gear that sounds like it looks... It is always cool to be like "yep... that sounds about right"... That's the one thing about Chandler's... They are sleepers man. They look like they are some dinky little toys, but they have explosive sound.

the ADL6000 is great. Pendulum MDP-1, and Electronaut mic pres are also amazing.

of course these threads are always a bit strange because as you see there are a hundred different ideas of what is good, or not.. and none of us have the OP's ears or aesthetic.
