Right, I get that, but I'm wondering whether the API 550 actually is or isn't a true bypass. I'd always understood it to be, so I'm keen to find out for sure.

I like new API and just had a question a about their two current Eq's and the differences between them in sound.
Since you like new API I’m assuming you tried both EQs....did you hear a difference in sound besides the extra band?

I'm surprised no one's mentioned the bandpass on the A's. So simple, but it works on so many things; helps focus a sound if you don't need the extreme highs and lows.

I often feel it sounds a bit mushy. Not my favorite filters.

I often called them the “smallerizers”

It's not a true bypass. It takes the eq filters out of the circuit, but not all of the electronics.

The 550a sounds cool if you just engage the unit boosting nothing at all.

Funny, that's what I like about them! Of course they're not always in, but if I want to tuck something into the mix but still be present, that filter plus three bands of API is pretty sweet.
