BUT, on the kick drum example it sounds clearly distorted to my ears, and nothing like a 47fet. It just doesn't do the same thing. To my ears, it sounds more like a neumann 147, which is what I'm trying to replace.
In your opinion, is that a bad recording or is that a fair representation of the mic? I guess what I'm asking is if the mic can handle the SPL. Not the case of the 147.

Thanks in advance!

PS: I also hated the sound of the Horch on that vocal, but it sounds equally bad (to my ears) with the neumann.
I haven't suffered any distortion with the Horch, just a fuller deeper sound than the U47Fet. It handles high SPL here.
Or alternatively the AA version is very similar to a Neumann at a fraction of the cost.
I don't think the Bonedo recordings are very impressive, the vocals sound terrible.

Thanks for you reply, Paul!
I don't know if you use it for this application, but if you have a minute to check out the kick drum recordings at the bottom (https://www.bonedo.de/artikel/einzel...2j-test/2.html)
and give me your opinion, that'd be really helpful. In that example, I do like the 47fet sound. That's what I'm after, really. I just think it's overkill to pay that much for a kickout mic. And, again to my ears, the Horch recordings sound collapsed.

Yeah I heard it. It's not a good representation of the Horch. The Horch should sound huge and clear.
Get the Advanced Audio CM47Fet I have 2 and they sound great - just like the Neumann but much cheaper.

Here’s something I did in May as a quick kick out mic test:

The lastest edition of Chris at Barbaric Amplification and me playing with this Samar TF08 capsule is the 49-circuit without local feedback with a 5840W tube and a Mohawk Studios B5887 6.5:1 “black box” transformer.

These samples are your’s truly working out the rust after not really playing much at all for the past 15-years. Mic was literally thrown up and these are the one and only passes.

On drums, mic at top of kick height, 3ft and 1ft out. Pre is a Shelford and set for nothing but it’s gain.

Files are 24-bit, 48k.

Congas: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1Q4t...ew?usp=sharing
Kick Out 3ft: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1nNE...ew?usp=sharing
Kick Out 1ft: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1sb-...ew?usp=sharing

I’d be interested hear what anyone thinks compared to what they’re used to.

Paul do you have the standard or CE versions of the 47FET?

Cheers,

I guess you know what my next question is going to be then?

Considering there's not a huge difference price-wise, If you were going for a pair would it be the Standard or CE editions?

Sounds good. Not exactly what I'm after. Thanks for sharing it though. Appreciated.
Best,

I used/fought fet 47's for years. I found them to sound a bit gravely and 'dry'. I usually thought I could have picked a better choice. I do like the 47 capsule sound, just not the fet 47 electronics.

I found the cheap Mic Parts version to serve that spot here. That mic is smooth and full.

I like the Roswell Mini K47. Doesn't have the "meat" of the ones we're discussing-but nice.

The Heiserman H47 FET has a great sounding capsule in it. (Eric makes a mean C12 style capsule too!)
I bet the UT 47FET will be another excellent 47 FET style microphone. [email protected] Arts, is very committed to...excellence IMHO.

I'd personally get the CE, it has an upgraded circuit which has a slightly faster punch. Build wise they both feel the same though, solid.
The standard version is still really good though and sounds like a Neumann to me.
Maybe you can try out both and send one back if you need to; AA are good people.

I have the Advanced Audio CM47 FET/CE. Tho the “CE” stands for “Custom Edition” therefore it has a diff capsule (AK47) And makes it sound more like a pre 1988 U87 but more tamed highs. Beautiful mic. Absolutely natural sounding on vocals

Just ordered one of these, primarily as an alternative to my AT4047. Very curious to hear it. I must say that the looks throw me off a bit... but on the other hand I realise that it's price is just what it is partly because of the looks.

Yes it doesn't look like a clone but it certainly sounds like one.
I actually like the look in the flesh, it's not as cumbersome as a 47fet.

Well it’s not really going after the 47fet sound because it has a diff capsule than originally designed. (As well as grill and all) really this mic is somewhere between a pre 1988 U87 and what a solid state M49 would sound like (this is per Dave). It is an incredibly natural mic. I have used extensively 1970s era U87 and this mic controls high end even better than that. Real smooth on the top. The low is right where it should be. I can’t say enough good things about this mic. I will be ordering another next year.

I also picked the AA 47FET for my outside-kick mic. Does the job great, better than anything else I'd tried over the years. Don't plan on moving it any time soon.
