What Monitors/Speakers Should I Use to Record Synths?

Hi,

I heard that Bruce Swedien while working with Michael Jackson as well as other engineers will sometimes run synthesizers through monitors/speakers and mic them to get a sound with more space, width, depth, 3-dimensional, airy, openness, etc...

I want to give this a try and I am looking at renting a hi-end studio that has the right monitors/speakers for me to try this. I will probably want to try micing the monitors/speakers with some ribbons like Royer R-121's, condensers like Neumann U67's, dynamics like Shure SM57's, etc...

I am not going for a lo-fi, distorted sound. If I wanted a lo-fi, distorted sound I would run my synths through amps. I want to try monitors/speakers to get a more wide frequency response and higher fidelity sound than amps.

My question is, what type of monitors/speakers would you recommend for this and why? Should they be a 1-way, 2-way, 3-way+ design? Should they be a sealed enclosure? Should I use soffitted mains?

Would you place the mics right up on the speaker or further back in the room where the engineer sits in the center of console listening perspective?

I know this is all subjective, but I want to get some idea of where to start so I don't waste too much time while renting an expense studio to try this...

If you don't have experience with micing synths through monitors/speakers, I'd be curious to hear your perspectives on micing other instruments through monitors/speakers in an echo chamber.

Thanks in advance!
