Crane Song Syren tubes and sound!

Hi everyone,

Not much userinfo on this online, so I just took a chance and bought it!

Haven't tried it yet, but I opened it, and it looks relatively easy to switch the tube,
so I just wondered if anyone have tried that? Putting in a vintage Telefunken or Mullard or something?

I'd also love to hear some opinions on the pre-amp. Will share mine when I have tried it for a while.

Telefunken, Mullard, Amperex, RCA would all sound good in there.

I have some of those laying around in another studio. What changes could I expect in the sound from putting in a vintage tube? What characteristics does the current 12AX7 have compared to say a Mullard? Haha .. same question I guess

I think that an old Mullard will be more three dimensional, smoother, warmer and better resolution than a new 12AX7. They have a very big and rich midrange.

A new tube may be higher output, possibly brighter, harsher and less nice overall in comparison.

Telefunkens are the most dynamic and hifi tubes, brighter than Mullard. Very detailed. Amperex are kind of in-between.

How are you liking it?

It is great actually! Above all expectations. To my ears it sounds almost like tape-saturation. It's clear and very present, and it has a focused lower end and mid presence that reminds me of studer tape-saturation. This is just to my ears and my mind though, but i love it. My favourite 500-module so far! Hoping to pair it up with a Pulse tec 500 series EQ soon.
