UA 6176 Compressor acting weird

Hello everyone,

I just recently acquired a UA 6176 unit. What I have noticed so far:

I start leveling the mic pre, getting a good signal peaking at -3 dB, then I add the 1176 with a 4:1 ratio and fast attack and release. When I set the Input to 1, no GR happens, between 2 and 3 the GR starts, but immediatly with about 10dB of Compression. The f**k? No matter how delicately I set the Input gain, it's either no GR or more than 10 dB GR.

I bought a used unit, so now I worry that the thing is broken in any way? Is that just due to the extremely fast attack and the fairly slow analogue meter?
It sounds just fine, but the Meter doesn't really discriminate between 20:1 and 4:1 which just seems weird.

Is that normal for a 1176?

All the best,
Drago
