Neve Vintage Equipment

Neve Vintage Equipment

As promised, I will post here some basic information and images of genuine vintage Neve modules and components in order to clarify the different versions and age of these much sought after items

Starting with the very discussed and confused 1272 (This Marketing link is incorrect because it links to a CLONE which is a recently manufactured COPY of the genuine original Neve 1272 module and another product based on the original Neve module technology)

The 1272, irrespective of gain was called by Neve a 'Line Amplifier' and was usually used to amplify bus level signal from voltage mix bus bars

The bus level would be averaging at about -40dBu depending on the number of console channels and mix resistor value

For each console the 1272 gain was adjusted by gain boost components, for each bus bar, which were soldered external to the module on the back connector and the final level set by a preset pot on the module front panel or in earlier consoles by a front panel level control

This 1272 later became referred to as a Bus Amplifier but was not originally named as such by Neve

The 1271 was a single stage line amplifier, very similar to the 1272 and mostly used for output fader or other insertions, line level inputs such as reverb returns and auxillary inputs and as a general purpose gain stage buffer

Neve called the input module, which usually, but not always, included the microphone input amplifier, line input amplifier, eq, filters and phase change button a 'Channel Amplifier'

There should be NO confusion between the units termed Channel Amplifier and Line Amplifier

Here are some different versions of the 1272 Line Amplifier
