Great on electrics but imo, anything with a string. (& most heads and throats!

Worth saying (albeit somewhat obvious) is as much as I do love the BG2, any personal bias asside, whether the Lisson or Chandler or Qes labs or whatever, assuming one has some quality tools around, it's all in the hands of the user.

That said, I haven't heard the Chandler which is seemingly the other one to also give some consideration at that price point.
I have a chandler redd 47 and I was originally looking at the rs124 but the bg2 just seems more versatile. It would be cool the have the matching boxes.

is there anything any of you guys prefer over a Chandler/BG2 for vocals?

Any die hard CL1B or LA2A fans?

something that isn't a 5-15k Fairchild clone?

But Imo still different to the Sta and the RS124.
I think the RS pushes/features the mids more which is awesome for getting bass and drums to pop.
They're different enough to where It'd be cool to have both for sure.
I really enjoyed the BG2 as well..... Got out my Ricky bass and DI'd it to the RS124 attack setting.. i enjoyed the fact that the release times were less stiff than the RS124 recovery times... Really dug the other attack option for drum bus as well and bass for mixing. For the $, I feel like it gives the Lisson Grove a run for its money. Haven't tried the RS124 but have used the John one which was a great box.

LA2A is great, especially with an 1176. That was my goto until I got the Greg Hanks units. Those are my all time favorite pre and comp. I recently bought a third unit.

I mean the list is endless. But honestly the RS124 would be on the lower end of my list for vocal duties. The BG2 is great for vocals but I would probably reach for the classics first. LA2A, 1176, LA3A, Sta Level, 175B etc.

I had 4 John built 124's.they were cool but I didn't use em on vx a whole lot.
the newer Chandler builds w/ the various release times are much more versatile.fuse mode too .
I used them a lot on vocals.
in my testing last week the BG2 killed the Sta on vocals and bass in mixes for that vari-mu glued down thing but more alive sounding.
I actually sold the Sta.
you know when you're seeing dust collecting on the knobs its time to reconsider lol.

Yes I was referring to the John builds I'd used. Adam is bringing me a pair up next week! I have a feeling it's quite a different beast than the John ones. Im very excited to have a listen and figure out what i'll have to sell to own a pair...

There are a few users of the 14b on here, seems to go down well, bit more affordable too.

Anyone care to share any AC guitar samples with the BG2 in the chain? Wouldn't mind hearing it on the Lisson Grove or Chandler RS124 as well.

Thanks for saying so.
Trying to remember specifics but mostly, WSW 811510b OR Magnacord modded tube pre > BG2 > Retro 2A3 OR analog addicts custom EMI tube eq > Burl B2.
(sometimes into Neotek series 1 console w/ Ursa Major Stargtate or re-201 on buss printed going in)

TBH, I give much credit to Brian Lucey's mastering. He did a great job.

Maybe I'm missing something, but a good 'ol Distressor does many thing very well. They can be found regularly for right under $1,000 USD.
Good Luck!

You are missing something, the rest of what I posted. Is there anything people prefer on vocals over the bg2/rs124 that isn't a 5-15k Fairchild clone? I imagine the answer to that is not the Distressor, even though it's great.

I already have a versitle compressor that does most things very well, but am guessing the 2 comps above do some things extremely well hence the fuss

I'm in UK and see this listed a lot, is it any good? Any argument for one over a good pair of pultec clones? A more vibey emi (tape machine) amplification stage I guess?

Don't want to derail the OP but here's the details on the AA emi based dual eq/pre. Tough to describe but I really like what it does. Still getting my head around it here the last few weeks.

Dual chan EQ unit with green front panel
Dual chan vintage EMI module
EF86 and ECC88 valve stages
Transformer balanced line inputs - EMI transformers.
Transformer balanced mic inputs - Partridge transformers for 200/250 ohm spec mics
Transformer balanced line outputs - Carnhill 600 ohm outputs
Phantom power for mic inputs
Mic inputs with input level controls to set gain
Oversized power supply - Carnhill power transformer set for correct voltage
Dual VU meters

looks cool!

Cool, you got the version with the preamp front end, nice!!

More on subject, how do you like the bg2 compared to the Foote P4 DMS? I got the first bus version he made, Roger is the man! I've been looking forward to getting something to compliment it, Highland is top of my list, with Chandler and Locomotive under consideration too.

As much as words often fail,
The P4 is large, wide & clear control.
BG2 is like a high quality grass fed butter. Add to taste as needed via its controls. It's flexible though w impedance control etc.
Best I can say, descriptions give me headache.
