could someone explain the boost cut method

i,m a little confused with the pultec eq effect, if you boost broadband then cut a narrow band at the same freq, you get a notch at that centre freq, and two bumps on either side, is this not the same as 2 freq boosts?

It's different.

A big wide boost wil get more gradual at the far edges.

Two boosts would have symmetrical edges.

The cut in the demo has a narrower Q, plus the cut interacts with the boost, so the shape in the center where the cut is will be different that it would have been if there were two boosts.

You'd probably see it if you used a plug in and boost and cut the same frequency, but set the boost wide and the cut narrow.
