That's why when I speak with people, or make recommendations in forums, I usually start off by asking more questions to gather more information about what someone really needs. Sometimes people even think they need to make corrections or a purchase in one area, when it turns out that they haven't even determined their own needs correctly.

How To Get Better Answers To Your Recording Studio Gear Questions - by Dan Richards

You can search my post history on GS, and I'm sure there's at least a good 200 products I've recommended to people, and certainly have discussed many more. There is no "best winner," but there certainly are some standouts. And there are products that are the best in their class and price range and for what they do.

There's quite a few companies that are well known now, that hardly anyone had heard of before I came in contact with them, and later started letting people know about the company and their products. That's been a major drive for me all these years. To get the right tools in the right people's hands. And to help companies building great tools to expand and grow. I've also consulted with manufacturers on product development.

I've put a lot of time and effort into being able to knowledgeably use and discuss mics, preamps, outboard gear, monitors, converters, recording techniques. I think if you look back, you'll also see enough feedback from people that make it obvious that I know my stuff.

My recommendations have put multi-millions of dollars of pro audio products in end-user's hands.

Sure, the world is full of people who have only tried a few things, and love to jump and down to justify their purchases. Their posts are also only a line or two long—often with lots of exclamation points.

There are others that have more real-world, in-the-trenches experience.

It's up to anyone to qualify the source of answers and recommendations they're receiving to questions and inquiries.

I guess you´re using the MC-3+ ?

Do you still use the rme aes and clock it with the Mutec or do you use the MC-3+ with usb?

Thanks!

No USB in use here, so yes the RME AES get its clock from the mutec as well.

The RME clock is rather bad sounding in my experiences and I would avoid it as the master if possible.

Thanks for your fast reply -that´s what I expected !

I also don´t use the rme as clockmaster, I´ve had a Rosendahl for some years and now use the clock of my Hilo but I was always interested in the MC-3+.
I might give it a try, so I can distribute the clock and wouldn´t have to daisychain.

Does it make sense to have 2 channels of top-level AD just for tracking? Would, say, a song entirely tracked through a burl sound noticeably better than if tracked through a Lynx Aurora?

Yes, I would say so.....

I got a Sparrow AD to compliment my RME FF800 and it really makes a huge difference.
Some people say you need to upgrade the DA as well as you won't hear the benefits of the AD,... well that is not true, yes it would probably sound better with better DA, but upgrading the AD really makes the RME shine.

Source is so important, ...it's all !

Cool thread! I'd always worried that I'd spend a lot of money on conversion and not hear a difference. I got a Sound Designs MixPre6m and it does sound great! However, there is a SD Mixpre thread and someone recorded the same classical performance with the Mytek 192 (I believe). The Mytek sounded more airy/open and the Mixpre more organic (for lack of a better word). Pretty eye opening, and I was surprised at the Mixpre holding it's own. I would strongly recommend taking a look at the Mytek, since I was surprised at the sound and price. I can imagine the higher end stuff is even better, but nice options to have for the future!

Balanced analog input ADC. It has dual AES and S/PDIF outputs, both are active. It needs + - 15 and + 5 volt power supplies.

Or, the Mytek Brooklyn ADC will do for $1995. It does MQA and has switchable input transformers.
