Looking for a great all around tracking compressor--Suggestions?

I'm looking to add a high end compressor to my chain to be used primarily for tracking and need some advice. I'm looking for something that can handle vocals, bass, electric and acoustic guitars. For the most part, I'm starting from scratch as the only other compressor I own is a FMR RNC. Style of music is predominantly rock/indie and solo acoustic.

I can get a pretty smoking deal on the Manley ELOP, but I'm not sure how flexible it would be given the lack of adjustable attack/release/ratio. Still for a stereo unit, it looks like a viable candidate.

I'm really really really interested in the Retro STA-Level. Even though it is only one channel, would it cover me on the sources listed above?

Also considering the Rupert Neve Portico Comp., the Distressor, and maybe an 1176...

I don't plan on doing much buss compression, but for any of the stereo units mentioned, I would love to here how they might fare in this regard as well. Also open to other suggestions as well.

Thanks,
Chris

There are lots of great compressors, but the Distressor is by far the most flexible compressor I have ever used. When I am doing records overseas and have to travel light my distressor and my Pacifica are the two things that must travel with me.

I would say an 1176. I don't have much experience with Distressors though, so they may be a better option.

Is the Crane Song STC8 just a double Trakker?

I mean a 2 channel Trakker?

A Distressor (in the right hands) is WAY more flexible than an 1176

Can you use an 1176 to split open a coconut?

Can you use it to harpoon a fish?

Can you use it to bash open a monkeys head and use it to eat its brain?

Can you use it as pillow?

And most important can you use it to start a fire?

If no it wouldn't be my choice of a compressor to be stranded on a deserted Island with.
(By the way why would you want to compress anything on a deserted Island to begin with...i mean if its deserted than there really isn't any one to record right?).

Gee...ThrillFactor, I did not mean this to be taken so literally. I suppose you wouldn't rely on any compressor as your only means of survival. I guess I more ment that if I could only keep one of compressors to track with, I would have to pick my good old blackface 1176. tutt

You wont get a lot of people recommending the Sta Level since their aren't that many around. I'd got two Sta Levels -- I love them and would definately bring on on the "desert Island" or a Neve or Chandler.

Just kiddin papa.

Its just when i read a "taking a piece of gear on a deserted island" type thread or response i think of Tom Hanks being stuck on island in the movie "Cast Away".

Remember Wilson...Wilson!!!

I think of trying to split a coconut open with an SM57 and i go "ahhhh...nice...now is see what he is talking about".

LOL Thank you Thrill for making me laugh so hard. Nice one!!!
You forgot the MOST important: it would be nice if your desert island compressor could float.
