Germanium or Vintage design ?

Hello !!!

Needs the best for nice present vocal. Female airy voice... Needs something delicate, but in your face high mids, wide open preamp.

So Germanium,

Or Vintage design 73's ?

I will work with a M149...

Thanx !!

Was wondering the same thing, meaning Germanium vs. Vintage Designs and found this old thread, so that's the reason for bumping.

What I'm looking for though is a very coloured, thick box that offers some grit if wanted. Anyone have experience with both? I'd be using the pre with all kinds of stuff, male lead and harmony vox, guitars, di bass, synths, reamping drum samples etc.

I stopped using the Germ for vocals pretty early on,especially for female vox.
C12 and Telefunken V-76m is a good usual starting point for me

Who has done a shoot out between the Germ and a Vintage Designs 73? Anyone?

Thoughts/responses/resolution?

I haven't tried the germanium but a few years ago I owned a CA73. From what I've heard about the germanium I don't think you could compare them. I kind of liked the CA73 but not for vocals, the api 312 is way warmer and fatter then the CA73 and API is not considered warm I guess. I liked the CA73 for acoustic guitars. Pretty much iron in the sound but not fat or warm. I had an early version so the sound might have changed but according to Vintage design it has not.

Nothing to do with the preamp but I bought a tone control, great eq. Not as coloured as I thought but still great..

I disagree very strongly with this.

Guess it just shows how differently we all hear things.

Looking for a good preamp to a U87, have the V.D M73(mk2) at the moment and i´m not all that convinced actually. Heard only good of the Germanium, haven´t tried it though.

Warm and fat and smooth open, great mids...I think of Great River when you talk about what you want...

The GR stuff always feels like a cross between a 1073 and an API 512 to me.

I love mine on vocals at the moment.

I did a test between Germanium, Vintage Design CA73 and LTD-1 singing into a Brauner Valver and SM7. I must say, I was surprised how good CA73 sound especially for voice, and LTD-1 of course very good too. Germanium was also nice, but were not what I was searching for. Everything subjective as usual.
I can recommend an interesting listening test between these.

I have soundclips from the test, but the song I was singing is a famous swedish song, thats why I can't load up the files.

My unit could have been damaged, It was not a subjective difference but a fact in this case between the CA73 an API. I got my unit directly from the owner of vintage design in exchange for an avalon 737 so I never even considered that It could have been broken. I guess I will never know since I won't buy another one...

I have not tried the germ, but own the VD CA73. And I love it!! It was exactly what I was looking for. The eq sounds really cool.

Are you after the original 1073 sound?

Sometimes I feel that the Germ pre can lack a bit in the focus area. Most in the hi end. Maybe I'm bored??

Best,
