La-2a...How do I know it's a vintage model?

UA did a damn fine job on the re-issue. I've never seen or heard either, but the new one as far as I can tell looks a lot like the vintage model.

How can one tell them apart (visually that is)?

As far as i know, the re-issue has a big "UA" logo on the front above the meter.
...the original does not....

Also, on the vintage hardware, the compress/limit switch is located on the back.

The IEC (mains cable) input at top left.

Also, the "CE" emblem wouldn't be on an old one.

Best guide is the UA Classics logo in the diamond shape on the front above the meter. The other stuff like xlr's and switches could be mods to an original. Mine has the comp/limit switch moved to the front but it's an original. If you look for some pictures of each on the net you'll see the difference is fairly obvious.
